Then God said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her"(Gen 17:15-16). Sarah was one of the first women in the Bible whose life teaches us some great lessons. God promised her and Abraham great things. But she was so discouraged as she advanced in her age so that she came up with a plan of her own. It seems she never bothered to seek God and to find a heavenly solution on her problem. Though there were promises yet she failed to recognize almighty God’s ability to give her a child. Her hopes faded away and dreams came crashing down. Probably great fear settled down in Abraham and Sarah’s heart that they would never have a child and their inheritance would be of Eliezer a stranger (Gen 15:2). Isn’t it happening to many of us that we fail to seek God and try to find our own solutions instead of seeking the heavenly solution? We start losing hope and faith. Fear fills our heart. That is the reason why heavenly solution is very important in our lives. Man’s plan may work sometimes and may not work sometimes but the plan and solution that comes from God will work every time. Sarah came up with a disastrous plan that took away the peace and joy of their lives. Their home became a place of strife and tears. But at the ninetieth year of her life, God gave her the promise of becoming “a mother of nations and that kings shall be from her”. God changed her very name from Sarai to Sarah. The meaning of Sarai in Hebrew is "to persist," "to exert oneself," "to persevere." Her name could mean, "to contend"(Genesis 16:6). As "Sarai" changed from a mere contender for her position as first lady in the home, into the recipient of the divine promise, she became "Sarah," i.e., a "princess" (from sarar, Heb., "to rule"). Sarah when she saw that the promise of God was coming true before her eyes in her ninetieth year of her life, her joy and laughter returned as she came in the center of God’s plan. We read in Gen 21:6-7, “And Sarah said, "God has made me laugh, and all who hear will laugh with me. She also said, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? For I have borne him a son in his old age." Impossibility became possible because of the mighty power of God. Yes, there is a God with whom anything and everything is possible. He can change any situation, He can perform any miracle and He can do wondrous works that no one could ever imagine. When we have this big God why do we need to fear for anything. We see similar miracle in the life of Elizabeth and her husband Zacharias. Both were righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years”(Luke 1:6-7). Bible tells us in Luke 1:13-14, “But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.” Are you in need of a miracle? Look to Jesus, there is nothing impossible with God.
Who Am I?
I was recently reflecting on my life, “Who am I?” and my memory goes back to my early days. My parents are from south India from the state of Kerala. The state consists of beautiful, lush green landscape having mountains on one side beautiful beaches on the other side with rows and rows of coconut and palm trees, evergreen forests, yucca and paddy fields. It is a so beautiful land that some call it “God’s own land”. Both of my grandfathers were in high-ranking jobs and thus they were rich and were respected in town. Though I was born in Trivandrum, Kerala, I was raised in northern parts of India. Only occasionally we went to our grand parents house. As the train passes from one state to another from north India to South, you can see a drastic difference in sceneries, climate and vegetations. Everything looks completely different, even language, dress, food and culture. Every morning fisherwoman would come with her big baskets, full of different kinds of fish. All the children would gather around her, as grandma would purchase fishes for lunch and dinner. But in the parts of North India where we lived, we could hardly find fishes or seafood. Even I had very little contact with the people of Kerala. The general opinion about Keralites is that they are very simple, hardworking and intelligent people. Many work in foreign countries and because of it wealth is flowing in that land. How proud I felt knowing that Kerala was the first 100% literate state in India. So I came from this rich background. My parents were very religious. They never failed to attend Church services and sending us in Sunday school as well. Our home was always open for prayer meetings. Many good preachers came to our home and conducted regular prayer meetings. But as I was growing many things bothered me. There was no peace in our home and I was not good in my studies. Obviously my parents were very much worried about my future thinking what I am going to make out of my life? I was tired of my failures. No matter how I worked hard yet I faced defeat in my life. There was no hope for me and for my future. In those desperate moments I gave my life to Jesus. God started changing my life and my surroundings. My failures turned into success. He blessed me beyond measure. Today whatever I am, only because of Him and His great love that He showed in my life. He gave His life for us. He loved us with everlasting love. My heart was filled with gratitude toward God and His Love. With tears in my eyes, I asked, "Who am I, O Lord GOD? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far?” David asked the same question in 2 Sam 7:18, “Then King David went in and sat before the LORD; and he said: "Who am I, O Lord GOD? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far?” It is not our goodness or worth that God looks in us but He looks in the hearts of people. What good is in us? Nothing!! Psalmist says in Psalm 14:3, “They have all turned aside, They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one.” Bible also says in Rom 3:23, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” But if we repent from our sins, He is ready to forgive our sins and to take us in. Bible says in 1 John 1:8-9, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” From outside everything may look good but it is possible that you could be completely broken inside and may be have no hope at all. Come to Jesus, He can help you.
