By Sherly Isaac

Rebekah – the bride of Isaac. It is a very interesting story of their marriage. It begins with Abraham who was called by God to leave his father’s house and to go to the land that He was about to show him. Gen 12:1, “Now the LORD had said to Abram: "Get out of your country, from your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you.” So Abraham left his country Ur, which was in Iraq. But his brother Nahor and his family stayed there.

Isaac was born to Abraham in his old age. God made a covenant with Abraham and promised great things for him and for Isaac. Because of that, Abraham was careful in choosing a bride for Isaac. When he grew, Abraham asked his faithful servant Eliezer to go and find a bride for his son Isaac. We read in Gen 24:7-8, "The LORD God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, 'To your descendants I give this land,' He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. And if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be released from this oath; only do not take my son back there."

Eliezer left the land of Canaan and came to Mesopotamia to the city of Nahor. He prayed in his heart that God lead him in the right direction so that he could find the right bride for Isaac. God answered his prayers showing Rebekah the daughter of Bethuel. (Genesis 24:11-14)” Bible also says in Gen 24:21, “And the man, wondering at her, remained silent so as to know whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not.” Further we read that Eliezer talks to the family of Rebekah and tells the purpose of his coming. We also read how God arranged everything through Eliezer who had never seen Rebekah or any of their family members and yet he could reach to the right girl. It exactly happened just as Abraham told him that, “God would send His angel with him and prosper his way.” When they asked Rebekah whether she is ready to go with Eliezer, she said, yes as we read in Gen 24:58, “Then they called Rebekah and said to her, "Will you go with this man?" And she said, "I will go."

This was God appointed wedding. God Himself picked a girl for Isaac. We read in Gen 24:48, "And I bowed my head and worshiped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the way of truth to take the daughter of my master's brother for his son.”

What did God see in Rebekah? Bible tells us that Rebekah was a righteous woman. When she was in trouble she sought the Lord for an answer as we read in Gen 25:21-23, “Now Isaac pleaded with the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD granted his plea, and Rebekah his wife conceived. But the children struggled together within her; and she said, "If all is well, why am I like this?" So she went to inquire of the LORD. And the LORD said to her: "Two nations are in your womb, Two peoples shall be separated from your body; One people shall be stronger than the other, And the older shall serve the younger."

It is strange how she became ready to leave her family and go to a strange land in the company of a bunch of strange people. But now I believe that she took a giant step of faith to do what God wanted for her life.

God cares for the righteous, those who fear Him and those who walk in His ways. When the king of Egypt ordered to kill all the Israelites male children, the midwives did not obey him and God blessed their lives as we read in Exo 1:20, “Therefore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very mighty. So it was, because the midwives feared God, that He provided households for them.”

Psalmist says in Psa 84:11, “For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.” Yes, He will not withhold any good thing from those who walk uprightly. He will certainly reward you and answer your prayers.

Equipping for the ministry - Part 3

By Sheela Isaac

As I wrote earlier, God not only calls you for His ministry but also puts you in the school to learn. He teaches things through various experiences. Some times this training does not look good as He just doesn't show things from outside but He takes you through the experiences. You really play those rolls and live through those experiences. Sometimes it looks quite hard to go through those experiences and learn. One of such experience we had last year when my dad had gone through the valley of death. Now when we inquired from him to know what he felt during those days, he simply says, “I do not remember what happened most of the days.” Once we told him when he was in ICU that God has promised to heal him.” At that time he says that he thought, “I have no problem and I am not sick either, then why these people are talking like this." To my dad the two months sickness and the ordeal looked like a 'blank' period but when we think about it, it was quite a horrible experience for us because we lived in it, a day at a time and went through it. The pain, the waiting time in hospital, the hundreds of visits to hospital, his condition between hope and despair, which we really lived through still brings tears in my eyes. Yesterday as my dad was laughing and talking something and examining some gadgets and giving his opinion suddenly I began to think, "a year back we never thought that this day would ever come in our life and we would ever see him alive again and in good health." God puts you in school to teach various things.

1. Develops total trust in God:
One day suddenly we found ourselves in the clutches of enemy. We lost all our freedom to move out of our home. Those days were horrific days when professional killers were waiting at our street to endanger us. I still remember the man in his thirties who used to sit on his scooter (motorcycle) in the corner of our street. Month after month we saw him sitting there even most of the times from morning to night. His scooter was different than any other scooters because it's sides were painted in pink. So every time when we used to see the pink scooter parked at roadside it used to remind us of danger. That was the time when we realized that human help cannot solve this problem but only God's help can solve it. My brother used to go to the bank to cash money and it was just five minutes ride from our house. Once my brother went to bank and after finishing his work there as he stepped out, he saw the man with the pink scooter sitting at door steps talking to the security guard of the bank. As soon as he saw my brother exiting the bank he was getting ready to stand up. My brother knew right away about the danger. He had just seconds to decide what to do. He had no other choice but to seek God’s guidance for his survival. He prayed in between the little time when the security of bank was engaged in talk with him. God said to him not to go by the regular route and so he took the route that Lord had asked him to take. As my brother looked back he could see the man with pink scooter about to finish the talk with the guard and ready to leave. After taking the long route when he reached the corner of our house he saw the man with the pink scooter sitting there. As soon as he saw my brother he stood up in wonder and surprise and looked at my brother. Well he might have thought, "how come you left first but you are coming late or how come I could not find you." This was the time when we really learned to hear from God. In all these ordeals God was with us and whatever counsel we got from God helped us to escape each and every time. This was the time when we really developed full trust on God. We knew without any shadow of doubt that Jesus is sufficient for any problem. He is able to solve any trouble. Jesus never allowed us to fall in our enemy's hand.

Look at the life of Jehoshaphat. The Bible says that he walked in the ways of God. When he found out that an army is coming to make war with him he was scared. What did he do at this time? The Bible says that he looked toward God. He declared a fast in all Judah and cried out before God. He knew that his survival depended on God. 2 Chr 20:3, "And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah." Jehoshaphat cried out before God saying, 2 Chr 20:9, 'If disaster comes upon us; sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine; we will stand before this temple and in Your presence (for Your name is in this temple), and cry out to You in our affliction, and You will hear and save.' He cried out before God and God never turned him down. The Bible says that they even did not need to fight the battle but God gave them victory. 2 Chr 20:17, 'You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the LORD, who is with you,..' The Bible says that God set ambush against their enemies. 2 Chr 20:22, "Now when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated." It means that God might have set His angels to fight for them and the next verses tell us that the ammonites and the army of the enemy fought against each other and died. It looks that God had confused them so that they fought against their own team members and died. 2 Chr 20:23 -24, "For the people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. And when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another. So when Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked toward the multitude; and there were their dead bodies, fallen on the earth. No one had escaped."

2. God does supernatural miracles for His people:
If you are a child of God and working for God, God would not only train you but would do supernatural miracles which cannot be refuted. When Herod saw that killing of James pleased Jews he decided to do it with Peter too. Peter was kept in prison to be killed. Acts 12:1-3, "Now about that time Herod the king stretched out his hand to harass some from the church. Then he killed James the brother of John with the sword. And because he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to seize Peter also." Peter did not know what would happen to him next day but God knew. If God had not come at the right time Herod would have killed him too. That night God sent His angel and rescued Peter in a miraculous way. Acts 12:5-10, "Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church. And when Herod was about to bring him out, that night Peter was sleeping, bound with two chains between two soldiers; and the guards before the door were keeping the prison. Now behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, "Arise quickly!" And his chains fell off his hands. Then the angel said to him, "Gird yourself and tie on your sandals"; and so he did. And he said to him, "Put on your garment and follow me." So he went out and followed him, and did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. When they were past the first and the second guard posts, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, which opened to them of its own accord; and they went out and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him."

Today also God does supernatural miracles in the life of His people. Few months back I heard a remarkable story of a Chinese Evangelist Yun in TV. He got saved at the age of sixteen and he began to preach the Gospel. He was so zealous for the Gospel that he started an underground church, which was prohibited in China. In China you cannot preach the Gospel without the supervision of Government. He preached the Gospel and turned many to Christ and because of this he was counted as a criminal in China. He was arrested several times and was interrogated to reveal the names of the believers of his church but he refused. The police told him, “if you cannot tell who the church members are we know how to get those names”, and they gave him severe punishments. They beat him with chains and with steal boots and tortured him. Finally when he was in prison for the third time they crushed his legs so that he may never walk again. He was unable to walk and so they used to carry him if they wanted to take him somewhere. One night as he was totally desperate and in hopeless situation he saw Jesus standing by his side. Jesus said to him to get up and walk. He was very weak to get up and even he forgot that his legs were crushed and he could not walk. But when Jesus told him again he stood up and walked. Jesus said to him to follow Him. He said that the iron gates of prison opened one by one as he followed Jesus, the guards looked as if they were staring him but did not move. Finally when they came out, Jesus waved to one taxi and he rode away from that prison as a free man. The report says that no one ever escaped from that maximum security prison. The people call him heavenly man and you can read the excerpts of this story by clicking here or by purchasing book here.

I read about another supernatural miracle in the life of Pastor Jim Cymbala who has more than 10,000 members in his congregation now. When he began his ministry as a Pastor he had a church with few people. The offerings were not sufficient to pay church bills and mortgage. The amount written on envelopes was never there when they were opened. The offering was not sufficient and on top of that somebody was constantly stealing money from the offerings. Once he had to pay $260 for church mortgage but he was $100 short. He did not know from where the money would come. He was very desperate. He did not know what to do. So he went to his church and checked all the mail he received but there was no check in it. So he began to sob and pray earnestly. After some time he thought to go and see his P.O. box which was across the street. He walked there and opened it and nothing was there. His heart broke. As he was returning back to his church trucks were roaring on the road. He thought it was good if the on coming truck had flattened him and he would have got rid of this situation. His desperation was that great. As he returned and opened the church door there was an envelope on the floor. He thought, “there was no envelope few minutes back but from where it might have come.” He took that envelope in his hand and checked but there was no address or stamps nothing was on that envelope which could have suggested from where the envelope came. He opened the envelop with trembling hands and to his surprise there was two fifty dollar bills in it. When he saw that he could not believe it, tears began to stream down from his cheek and he began to praise God and began to shout Halleluiah.

Yes God does miracles in the lives of His children. We as a family saw many supernatural miracles in our lives and I can say that supernatural miracles do happen. In your desperate moments Jesus does show up. He sure comes when you cry out before Him.

Standing in the Gap - Fasting prayer on 8th Dec.. 2015

As the Bible says in Ezekiel 22:30 "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it." And also the Bible says in Numbers 16:48, "And he (Aaron) stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped." We have fasting prayer every second Tuesday of each month. Our next fasting prayer meeting will be conducted on 16th Nov. 2015
