The recent Shooting in Virginia tech is a grim reminder of the evil of fallen nature in human beings. The lives of many were cut short because of one man’s madness. Not only did he put others in trouble with endless pain, he also affected his own family. The shooter was filled with outrage and hatred for others. He blamed the rest of the world for his anger and senseless act.

The very first human beings did the same thing when they sinned against God and blamed each other as we read in Gen 3:11-13, And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?" Then the man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate." And the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

The same corrupt, rebellious, haughty and proud nature have been transferred from Adam to us. From generation after generation this nature, this sin, passed on, and on, and separated us from God.

But a new day came in the history of this world when Jesus came to this world to die for us, for our sins, to take away our sins. On the cruel cross He took our sins and shed His precious blood so that we could come out of our sins and live a holy life, so that we need not die, but live forever with Him.

With pride in our heart we cannot approach God but have to humble ourselves and repent from our sins. Heb 3:7-10 says, Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years. Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, 'They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.'”

Bible also says in Psa 149:4 For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the humble with salvation.” Also in 2 Sam 22:28, “You will save the humble people; But Your eyes are on the haughty, that You may bring them down.” Also in Psa 18:27, “For You will save the humble people, But will bring down haughty looks.”

Humbling ourselves gives us opportunity to find the grace of God. .Instead of blaming others for our misfortune, let us humble ourselves and turn to the creator who could change our lives. Who could make us whole and forgive our sins. Who could fill our hearts with joy and peace that passes all understanding. For this very purpose He came in this world and gave His precious life for us.

Psalmist also says in Psa 9:12, “…He does not forget the cry of the humble.” Yes, be humble and call upon Him and He will answer you from heaven. He will forgive and forget all your sins and will give you eternal life.

Awesome God - Part 3

By Sherly Isaac

After the death of Joshua and of the other leaders who had seen the mighty acts of God, the Israelites did evil against God. They turned their back to the God who brought them out of the land of Egypt. In the book of Judges 6th chapter Bible says that God got angry at the Israelites and He delivered them into the hands of the Midianites who ruled over them for seven years with iron fist.

Because of the Midianites, the children of Israel made for themselves the dens, the caves, and the strongholds which are in the mountains. And whenever Israel had sown, Midianites would come up; also Amalekites and the people of the East would come up against them. Then they would encamp against them and destroy the produce of the earth as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep nor ox nor donkey. For they would come up with their livestock and their tents, coming in as numerous as locusts; both they and their camels were without number; and they would enter the land to destroy it. So Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the children of Israel cried out to the LORD, ( Judg 6:2 –6).

But how compassionate LORD God Almighty is who came for their rescue one more time. When the children of Israel cried out to the LORD because of the Midianites, their cry reached heaven. From the 11th verse onwards we read how God visited the Israelites and delivered them through Gideon by His mighty power.

Just as the other Israelites, Gideon was also afraid of the Midianites. He was threshing wheat in the winepress of his father, in order to hide it from the Midianites. In Judg 6:12-13 we read, “And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him, and said to him, "The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!" Gideon said to Him, "O my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, 'Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?' But now the LORD has forsaken us and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites."

We can see the irritated reaction of Gideon because of all the torments he and the Israelites were going through. They were living in constant fear of the Midianites not knowing when they will come and destroy their harvested crops, live stocks etc. They were greatly impoverished because of the Midianites. Stories of Almighty God’s mighty power had no meaning for Gideon because he was seeing nothing but torment, pain and poverty. He could not recognize that the mighty God was with him in the midst of his dire situation.

Often when we go through terrible situations in our lives, we also feel as if God has left us. Our hearts fail. But look at the life of Gideon, how one encounter with God changed everything in his life. The same beaten down, frightened and battered man became a great leader and delivered the Israelites from their oppression. The same insignificant defeated man’s self-defeated life turned into a victorious life because he met the awesome God.

My friend, if this awesome God is with you, your defeats would turn into victory, your failures would turn into triumphs, your tears would turn into laughter.

I remember when I was in my final year of M.Sc (M.S.). Two months prior to my exams, I was bedridden with arthritic pain. Doctors called it sciatica. I could not move properly and the pain was severe. I could not go to college and attend my classes neither could I study at home because of excruciating pain.

Painful feelings encompassed me, foreboding of possible failure in my exams flashed before my eyes. “This time also will it repeat?” But this time it was not I who took the admission by myself on this subject but a miracle from God made it possible for me to have a seat. Also God helped me to clear my previous year enabling me to secure first class. But now the million-dollar question was before me, “how could I manage to go to the exam hall? If I could make it, even then, how could I write my exam without any proper preparation?” There was no hope for me. Great fear filled my heart and I thought, “how long am I going to see failures in my life? I don’t want to see it anymore.”

I started praying to God for a miracle. God indeed helped me. When only a few days were left for my exam, my pain started to cease. But still I was afraid to face my exam because I had studied very little during those months. But to my surprise when I opened my examination papers, the same questions were there for which I had studied. It was not a coincidence, for except for a miracle it was not possible. I wrote my exams well and God helped me to pass with flying colors.

Yes, He is an awesome God who wants to turn our failures into victories. He is the God who wants to bless our lives and wants to wipe away our tears. Just as He did for Gideon, He will do for us.

Standing in the Gap - Fasting prayer on 8th Dec.. 2015

As the Bible says in Ezekiel 22:30 "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it." And also the Bible says in Numbers 16:48, "And he (Aaron) stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped." We have fasting prayer every second Tuesday of each month. Our next fasting prayer meeting will be conducted on 16th Nov. 2015
