When we were teenagers there came the fashion of bell-bottom pants. My sister requested our parents that she wanted bell-bottom pants to wear in school. When dad heard that, he told her, “pants are not good for girls so there is no way to allow you to wear it.” Of course pants were not very popular in Indian society at that time. My sister argued, “What is wrong with it? All girls wear it in my school…” I joined my sister’s team and supported her. But dad firmly said, “no”. The argument continued for many days. At a point I resigned in my heart thinking we would never get through it. But my sister was not giving up and she continued trying to convince my dad. Mom was mediator between dad and us. She did a great job in negotiating our case. Finally dad allowed us to wear bell-bottom pants. A mediator does this for you.

When Job went through a horrible condition in his life, when he lost everything and desperately wanted to approach God and to plead with Him, he realized how pathetic his condition was without a mediator. He understood contrast between him and God in holiness. He knew that with all his sin he could not approach the holy God. And he longed for a mediator who could negotiate his case before God. In the book of Job we read in Job 9:30-35, “If I wash myself with snow water, And cleanse my hands with soap, Yet You will plunge me into the pit, And my own clothes will abhor me. For He is not a man, as I am, That I may answer Him, And that we should go to court together. Nor is there any mediator between us, Who may lay his hand on us both. Let Him take His rod away from me, And do not let dread of Him terrify me. Then I would speak and not fear Him, But it is not so with me.”

When God saw our pathetic condition, He sent His only Son to die for us so that He could stand between God and us and negotiate for our souls. We read in 1 Tim 2:3-6, “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time…”

Jesus shed His precious blood on the cruel cross so that our sins could be forgiven. Even today, Jesus is pleading for each and every person with the father so that our souls could be saved.

In Heb 9:11-15 we read, “But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.”

What a privilege to know that Jesus is standing between God and us and pleading our case. If we repent from our sins and turn to Him, He will forgive and forget all our sins and give us a new life.

Mother in Israel

By Sherly Isaac

Women played major roles in the Bible time and time again. We can find prophetess, women judges and women leaders in the Bible.

Bible talks about one of the prophetess named Deborah who judged Israel. We read in Judg 4:4-5, “Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time. And she would sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the mountains of Ephraim. And the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.”

During the time when she judged Israel the Israelites were under the bondage of the king of Canaan. They needed a deliverer who could deliver them from the harsh bondage of the Canaanites. Judg 4:3 tells us how they were being oppressed, “And the children of Israel cried out to the LORD; for Jabin had nine hundred chariots of iron, and for twenty years he harshly oppressed the children of Israel.”

God answered their cry sending word through Deborah. Deborah sent and called for Barak and told him the word God had given her about Israel. Further we read that Barak, Deborah and the Israelites went to fight against Jabin the king of Canaan. God delivered them in to the hands of the Israelites and a major victory was won.

Celebrating the event, Deborah sang, Judg 5:6-7, “In the days of Shamgar, son of Anath, In the days of Jael, The highways were deserted, And the travelers walked along the byways. Village life ceased, it ceased in Israel, Until I, Deborah, arose, Arose a mother in Israel.” Their activities came to a halt because of oppression and harsh treatment by the enemy, but God delivered them through the hands of a mother in Israel.

Another mother we see in the book of Ruth. Her name was Naomi. She went with her family to the land of Moab because there was famine in Israel. But Naomi lost her husband and two sons while living in that strange land. When famine was over she arose to come back to Bethlehem with her two daughters-in-laws. On the way one of her daughter-in-laws went back to her family but Ruth clung to her and followed her. Both of them came to Bethlehem. Bible says in Ruth 1:19, “Now the two of them went until they came to Bethlehem. And it happened, when they had come to Bethlehem, that all the city was excited because of them; and the women said, "Is this Naomi?"” The answer of Naomi was in Ruth 1:20, "Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.”

We can see the broken heart of a woman who was completely shattered because she saw death of her beloved husband and two sons. She was inconsolable and her pain was extreme. But joy came not only to Naomi but also to Ruth when they took refuge under the wings of the Lord God of Israel. God took care of them, gave a nice husband to Ruth a foreigner and Christ came through their lineage.

Yes, the same God could be your help today, if you cry out to Him and if you look toward Him. He will make a way for you and will wipe away your tears.

Standing in the Gap - Fasting prayer on 8th Dec.. 2015

As the Bible says in Ezekiel 22:30 "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it." And also the Bible says in Numbers 16:48, "And he (Aaron) stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped." We have fasting prayer every second Tuesday of each month. Our next fasting prayer meeting will be conducted on 16th Nov. 2015
