Yesterday was Ash Wednesday. Because Bible does not say anything about Ash Wednesday I gave a quick search in the Internet to see what Ash Wednesday is about. Here is what I find:

“Ash Wednesday is a time for repentance and it marks the beginning of Lent. Ashes were used in ancient times, according to the Bible, to express penitence (repentance of sins). Dusting oneself with ashes was the penitent's way of expressing sorrow for sins and faults. An ancient example of one expressing one's penitence is found in Job 42:3-6. Job says to God: "I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes." (c. 5-6, KJV) Other examples are found in several other books of the Bible including, Numbers 19:9, 17, Hebrews 9:13, Jonah 3:6, Matthew 11:21, and Luke 10:13.”

But the question is why a person needs to repent? Often people say, 'we are living a normal life… We are law abiding citizens and never committed any crime. So why we need to repent?' But Bible tells us that our first parents Adam and Eve sinned against God disobeying Him. The result was chaotic which was visible in the next generation itself. Adam and Eve had two sons. The elder son was Cain and the younger Abel. Both of them brought offerings before God. When God did not respect Cain nor his offering he got very angry and killed his own brother Abel. This fallen nature continued generation after generation. Even today this fallen nature is flowing through our blood. That is the reason why we see so much of wrong things, injustice, harassment, crime and ungodly activities in this world. Probably we have not committed big crimes as we see and hear on TV everyday but if we have spoken lie it is sin in the sight of God and if we have hated others it is as big a crime as of murder as we read in 1 John 3:15, “Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.”

Bible also tells us in Rom 3:23, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” and in Rom 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

But thanks to the Lord who sent His only Son to die for us so that we could come out of our sins and have eternal life. This season of Lent reminds us of the great sacrifice of Jesus for the sins of mankind. On the cruel cross He bled and died and purchased pardon for our sins. Because of His precious blood we can get salvation of our souls and achieve eternal life.

Jesus said in John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

If your sins are not forgiven today, if you are not sure about your destination whether you will go to heaven or not, then you need to make sure today. Repent from your sins and turn to Jesus. He will give you eternal life.

Let my life be given me at my petition

By Sherly Isaac

Est 7:3-4, Then Queen Esther answered and said, "If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request. For we have been sold, my people and I, to be destroyed, to be killed, and to be annihilated. Had we been sold as male and female slaves, I would have held my tongue, although the enemy could never compensate for the king's loss."

“let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request”, this was the petition of Queen Esther before King Ahasuerus. Queen Esther and her people were sold to be killed and annihilated according to the decree of the king which was devised by Haman. (Est 3:8-15), Then Haman said to king Ahasuerus, "There is a certain people scattered and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of your kingdom; their laws are different from all other people's, and they do not keep the king's laws. Therefore it is not fitting for the king to let them remain. If it pleases the king, let a decree be written that they be destroyed, and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver into the hands of those who do the work, to bring it into the king's treasuries.” So the king took his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews. And the king said to Haman, "The money and the people are given to you, to do with them as seems good to you." Then the king's scribes were called on the thirteenth day of the first month, and a decree was written according to all that Haman commanded; to the king's satraps, to the governors who were over each province, to the officials of all people, to every province according to its script, and to every people in their language. In the name of King Ahasuerus it was written, and sealed with the king's signet ring. And the letters were sent by couriers into all the king's provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate all the Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of in one day, on the thirteenth day of the twelth month, which is the month of Adar, and to plunder their possessions. A copy of the document was to be issued as law in every province, being published for all people, that they should be ready for that day. The couriers went out, hastened by the king's command; and the decree was proclaimed in Shushan the citadel. So the king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Shushan was perplexed.”

This order was for all the Jews in all the cities and towns of King Ahasureus’s rule. Bible tells us that King Ahasureus ruled over 127 provinces from India to Ethiopia as we read in Est 1:1 Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus (this was the Ahasuerus who reigned over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces, from India to Ethiopia).”

In every province wherever this king ruled, the life of the Jews was in danger. They had no other choice except to die. The decree was sealed by the signet ring of the King and there was no one who could change that decree. Decree of King brought mourning and wailing in the lives of the Jews.

But the newly made Queen Esther was a Jew who fasted and prayed. She went before the king and pleaded for her life as well as for her people’s lives. The king had to overturn his previous order and we read that he gave authority to Queen Esther as we read in Est 8:8 saying, "You yourselves write a decree concerning the Jews, as you please, in the king's name, and seal it with the king's signet ring; for whatever is written in the king's name and sealed with the king's signet ring no one can revoke."

And wherever the decree went, the Jews rejoiced and celebrated because of their victory.

My friend, today also we are sold in to the hands of the devil for utter destruction because of our sins. But Jesus came in this world to overturn the plots and plans of the enemy and to redeem us from utter destruction. He gave His precious life for us so that we could have eternal life and could rejoice and celebrate the new life He would give us.

No matter what you are today, you are heading toward utter destruction unless you give your life to Jesus. Jesus alone can save you from utter destruction and give you abundant life.

Standing in the Gap - Fasting prayer on 8th Dec.. 2015

As the Bible says in Ezekiel 22:30 "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it." And also the Bible says in Numbers 16:48, "And he (Aaron) stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped." We have fasting prayer every second Tuesday of each month. Our next fasting prayer meeting will be conducted on 16th Nov. 2015
