The first church was a Gospel preaching church.

By Sherly Isaac

The first church was a Gospel preaching church. What is Gospel after all? Gospel means "Good News". The sacrifice of Jesus Christ was for the salvation of the dying mankind. This "Good News" is for everyone who believes on Him. Jesus Himself preached this very truth to whomsoever He met. Mat 4:23 says that, "And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people." After the resurrection of Jesus, His disciples also did the same thing. They went around and preached the Good News of Jesus Christ, healed the sick, met the needs of the people and performed mighty miracles. This was the first Church.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ was preached not only within Israel, but also in the surrounding areas by His disciples. They journeyed to the places which were unknown to them. They met people whom they had never met before. Once I was studying the Bible using Biblical map and I was completely surprised to see that Paul had traveled to far away countries and had many long trips. He went to very distant places. This was 2000 years ago and I am sure that there would not have been such good traveling vehicles as we have in our times. Was it difficult for them to travel? I sure believe that it would have been very difficult for them to travel. Even today traveling is difficult in some parts of the world. People living in remote villages could not be reached by ordinary vehicles as there are no roads available. The only way to reach them is by foot.

But the disciples of Jesus went everywhere and preached the Gospel - the message of salvation and forgiveness of sin. Though their message was not welcomed by all yet they went around and preached wherever they could. And to preach the Gospel they risked their lives. They came across the worst opposition and yet they preached the "Good News". Does it surprise you? Yes, they got persecuted because they preached the "Good News". Even today the situation is the same. Many do not want to listen to the "Good News" which would save them from hell fire.

Paul says in Act 20:21-24, "Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there: Save that the Holy Ghost witnesses in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me. But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God."

Disciples took risk knowingly that their lives were in great danger yet it could not stop them from preaching the saving grace of God. This was the first Church, willing to preach the Gospel at any cost. Why? Once I heard a story. There was a good and kind doctor who loved the people and always tried to help the poor who were in need of medical aid. Once he was returning from his hospital. He saw an injured dog in a very bad shape. This doctor brought it in his hospital, washed its wounds and treated it. In a few weeks the dog was healed and left the place. Days passed by. One day while the doctor was working in the hospital he saw the dog coming back with an injured dog.

I don't know how much true the story is, but it illustrates the fact that if you are healed, you cannot keep it to yourself. You will share it with others. The same thing is true that when a person gets forgiveness of sin, he cannot keep it to himself but will share it with others. This was what happened to the disciples. They could not keep this glad tiding to themselves and despite all the hardship they went about and proclaimed the Good News to others. This was the first Church, passionate to preach the "Good News". They wanted to take the "Good News" to the fallen humanity at any cost. Do our churches have the same passion for the perishing souls? Young men and women are devastated and overwhelmed by their own problems. Old are desperate and confused because children has given up on them. Young and old alike are searching for answers, will our churches reach out to them with the "Good News" of Jesus Christ? Because there is only one answer "Jesus" for the dying and devastated people. Will our churches do something for those desperate people?

Jehovah-Jireh - God is Our Provider

By Sherly Isaac

There is a God who loves us, who cares for us and who is willing to provide for us abundantly. In the Book of Genesis God told Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac on Mount Moriah. Abraham obeyd God and took his son to be sacrificeed. When he prepared everything and as he took his knife to kill his son, an angel of God called from heaven and told him not to kill his son. And he saw a ram caught up in a thicket by its horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son. Then Abraham called that place Jehovahjireh as we read in Genesis 22:14, "And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen."

The word Jehovah-Jireh literally means that God sees or God watches over. This is the story of a devastated man whose heart was ripped apart thinking how to kill his own son, but God provided a substitute for him at the right time. How Abraham's heart would have rejoiced seeing the grace of God in his life. The same God who helped Abraham in his moment of total despair, can help us too. He can come for our rescue no matter what our situation is.

Are you afraid of bad economy? Are you afraid of losing job etc.? Look to Him, He is Jehovahjireh. He is ready to provide for you and for your family.

Once the disciples went fishing and could not catch anything. They toiled the whole night but all their efforts seemed to be futile. Nothing happened, not even one fish could they catch. They were tired, hungry and hopeless. But when the morning came, Jesus stood on the shore; the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Then Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any food?" They answered Him, "No." And He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish" (John 21:4-6).

In those moments of desperation Jesus stood among them and helped them to catch multitudes of fish. This was the love and concern of Jesus and His quality of provision for His children. Now this story does not end there. When the disciples came to shore with the multitudes of fish, they were amazed to see breakfast ready for them and it was prepared by Jesus Himself. We read in Jhn 21:8-12, "But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish which you have just caught." Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. Jesus said to them, "Come and eat breakfast." Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who are You?"--knowing that it was the Lord."

This is the love and care of Jesus for His disciples. This incident happened after the crucifixion and death of Jesus. It was the time when Peter and the other disciples of Jesus thought that everything was over for them. Their hearts were full of pain beyond description. In those devastating moments Jesus came to them showing His love and care for them. The same Jesus who cared for His disciples, will care for you if you are a child of Him. He will come rushing to rescue you.

When God made Adam, he was all alone. Probably his heart would have longed to talk to someone and walk with someone like him. Probably he felt lonely. Today we live in families, we have parents, brothers and sisters but Adam had no one to whom he could share his sorrows and joy. God who was aware of all thoughts understood the needs of Adam. After creating everything God could not find a helper for Adam so He said it is not good for man to live alone. We read in Gen 2:18, "And the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." And in Gen 2:20, "So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him." But Adam's problem was that there was no one like him in all the creation. He did not know what to think. But God made Eve and brought before him. It was the love and care of God for His children.

Even today, God wants to provide all our needs and wants to bless us. He promised in Psa 84:11, "For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly."

Standing in the Gap - Fasting prayer on 8th Dec.. 2015

As the Bible says in Ezekiel 22:30 "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it." And also the Bible says in Numbers 16:48, "And he (Aaron) stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped." We have fasting prayer every second Tuesday of each month. Our next fasting prayer meeting will be conducted on 16th Nov. 2015
