Poverty is a Curse

By Sherly Isaac

Mat 28:19-20,"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

These were the last words of Jesus when He was about to depart from this world. He gave instructions to His disciples, what to do when He is gone. How to evangelize the world. He told them, “make disciples, baptize them and teach them to observe all things that I have commanded you.”

When we read the Book of Acts we see how the disciples were doing everything exactly as Jesus had spoken to them. They went around and preached the Gospel with might and power. And God added to the church those who were being saved. As Acts 2:40-2:47 says, “And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation. Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.”

This first church grew up in leaps and bounds. Even one time, three thousand souls were added in the church. These things happened because they obeyed Jesus’ words and acted on it exactly as He commanded them to do. They continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayer. These were the keys for the success of their ministry. They saw explosive growth of the Church.

Now, how was this mega church funded? They shared their money among each other. They had everything in common. They sold their possessions and goods and divided them among all. They provided for the needy, sharing their money with them and the Bible says that none lacked anything. Acts 4:33-34, “And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all. Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold.”

Some people think that christians/preachers should live in poverty and that having a mega church is wrong. But often those who preach the message of poverty wants others to live in poverty while they live in luxury. They show as if they have much concern for the poor and needy, but in their actual practice in real life they back off. They often preach that evangelism should be done without money, property or resources, but they themselves try to enlarge their boundaries. If they are really concerned about the poor and needy, their neighbor’s house will not be in auction.

Paul was a disciple of Jesus who preached the Gospel in different places. Once I was looking at the map of his missionary journeys. I was completely amazed to see how at that time of history, when the resources for traveling were limited, he had gone to far away places to preach the Gospel. There were no modern vehicles as we have today and yet he traveled to different countries and towns to preach the Gospel. If he was poor and had no money with him how did he meet the expenses and how did he travel to different parts of the world?

In fact, Bible tells us that Poverty is a curse that comes from the devil and not from God. In the book of Deuteronomy, twenty-eighth chapter, poverty has been classified as one of the curses that comes to those who do not obey God. God always wants us to prosper and have a blessed life but devil wants to steel, destroy and kill.

A God who Helps

By Sherly Isaac

Psa 3:1 LORD, how they have increased who trouble me! Many are they who rise up against me.
Psa 3:2 Many are they who say of me, "There is no help for him in God." Selah
Psa 3:3 But You, O LORD, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head.
Psa 3:4 I cried to the LORD with my voice, And He heard me from His holy hill. Selah
Psa 3:5 I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the LORD sustained me.
Psa 3:6 I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people Who have set themselves against me all around.
Psa 3:7 Arise, O LORD; Save me, O my God! For You have struck all my enemies on the cheekbone; You have broken the teeth of the ungodly.
Psa 3:8 Salvation belongs to the LORD. Your blessing is upon Your people. Selah

Historians tell us that probably David wrote the above Psalm when he was in deep trouble because of Absalom. King David was fleeing from his son Absalom. He was in great trouble because his own son Absalom declared war against him and against his kingdom. David had no other option left but to run for his life. He had seen so many calamities all his life, but this was the biggest one. You know that it does not hurt much when outsiders do something against you but it deeply hurts when your own stand against you. David was heart-broken and was in tears.

At that time of trouble, people tried to tell him that even God cannot help him. But David who knew the Lord from the very tender age of his life, knew that there is a God who will hear his cry and will come for his rescue. As we read in Psa 46:1-2, “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;”

David says in Psa 3:3-4, “But You, O LORD, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head. I cried to the LORD with my voice, And He heard me from His holy hill.”

David knew that no matter what others may say, no matter what his circumstances could be, no matter how terrible the situation could be through which he might have to pass through, still there is a God who can come for his rescue. He was completely confident that the same God who was with him, will not allow him to be ashamed before his enemies but will exalt him.

When he called upon the Lord, He heard him from heaven and answered his prayers. Further he says in Psa 3:5-6, “I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the LORD sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people Who have set themselves against me all around.”

When God helps a person, he is really helped, as we see in the case of David. He was so peaceful that he slept well. He was not afraid of the multitudes who came against him. When enemies come against us and if we put our trust in God, we can experience the same peace and boldness as David had.

Because David knew that God will be taking care of him against his enemies he need not have to worry about them. As he says further in Psa 3:7-8, “Arise, O LORD; Save me, O my God! For You have struck all my enemies on the cheekbone; You have broken the teeth of the ungodly. Salvation belongs to the LORD. Your blessing is upon Your people. Selah”

Trust in the Lord and look towards Him for help. He can surely help you, sustain you and make you fearless. He is a mighty deliverer. He is ready to give hope to the hopeless. He will surely exalt you before your enemies.

Standing in the Gap - Fasting prayer on 8th Dec.. 2015

As the Bible says in Ezekiel 22:30 "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it." And also the Bible says in Numbers 16:48, "And he (Aaron) stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped." We have fasting prayer every second Tuesday of each month. Our next fasting prayer meeting will be conducted on 16th Nov. 2015
