Leviticus 11:45, 'For I am the LORD who brings you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy."

God of the Bible is Holy God. We read from the beginning that He hates sin. When Adam and Eve sinned against God they could not stand before the Holy God. They had to leave that place. When God was bringing out Israel from the bondage of Egypt, He gave them specific instructions that they should be holy and not defile themselves by any means.

When we come to the New Testament we see the same commandments as we read in Hebrews 12:14, "Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:"

Jesus Himself lived a holy life and showed an example through His own life, how we need to live a holy life. Bible also tells us that those who are in sin cannot enter into heaven. Gal 5:18-21, "But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."

How can a person live a holy life? The first step is to realize that you are a sinner. With all your efforts you could never be able to get out of your sinful life nor could you get forgiveness of your sins. Though we are incapable of coming out by our own efforts, God in His great mercy has provided us a way out and to have our salvation. He sent His only son in this world to die for us on our behalf so that our sins could be forgiven and that we could live a holy life. Not only that, we could also find eternal life.

Bible also tells us that there is no remission of sin without the shedding of innocent blood. We read in Leviticus 17:11, 'For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.'

And Jesus came in this world and by going to the cross and shedding His precious blood on the cruel cross; He gave a perfect sacrifice through which we can be saved. Today we can come out of our sins by repenting from our sins and accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

Bible tells us in John 1:12-13, "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."

The moment you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior you are born again. It means that now you are a new creation in Jesus. Your old sins are all forgiven and your spirit has become alive through Jesus. And if you are born again you need to continue to walk in the holiness of God everyday. Everyday you have to take the help of Holy Spirit and do according to the will of God. And God will surely help you.

How to Beat Depression?

By Sheela Isaac

Every person in this planet goes through depression some time or other. Anxiety and depression are common things we see in the lives of people. The question is, "Is there a way out to beat it so that we could live a joyful life?" I would say, "Yes, with the help of Jesus you can do that" If an unbeliever is going through depression we can understand, why? But most amazing thing is believers who claim themselves saved also go through it and most of the time they live a defeated depressed life.

Rom 12:1-2, "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

When we receive Jesus into our hearts as our Lord and Savior by confessing our sin and by repenting we become children of God. John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:" As soon as Jesus comes in one's heart they see a big change in their life but every area of life doesn't change instantaneously. Why? Because in many of the areas we hold on tightly to the old and we do not submit to the will of God. So those areas do not see any change. That's why Bible says in Romans 12:1-2 that we need to renew our mind. It means that we need to yield ourselves to Holy Spirit and listen to what His perfect will is. We need to read the word of God daily and need to examine our lives in the light of the Bible to correct our life and to change it. There are no automatic programs to change yourself but when we submit ourselves in the hands of Jesus, defeated areas of our life changes. The same thing applies with emotional and mental area too. There are many factors affecting our emotional and personal life. You can handle it to victory or to defeat. The result depends on the way you act. Let's talk about the sources how depression comes in various ways.

1. The attitude of hatred and anger is the first step toward depression

Phil 2:3, Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.

Hatred is the major cause of depression. If you think bad about somebody it is like placing one brick of hatred against that person. Then when you again think bad the second time you will place one more brick over the first one. If you continuously think bad about a person literally you will build a solid brick wall of hatred against that person. Once you build this emotional and mental wall against a person then it is very hard to break it and get rid of it. That's how hatred builds up. If you think bad about a person fifteen days in a row it means you have built a real hatred toward that person. This hatred leads to anger and depression. That's why Bible says, consider others better than yourselves. Why it says so is because that is how you can defeat hatred and depression. You can ask for forgiveness of your sin (hatred) to Jesus and get over it. As soon as bad thought creeps inside you about somebody if you refuse to dwell in it, and rebuke it, it will diminish and go away. Instead if you start thinking about the good things they have in their life by doing this in real you will defeat the evil plans of satan and you will defeat hatred and anger.

Mat 5:21 -22, "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.' "But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, 'Raca!' shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be in danger of hell fire.

The Bible says to consider others as better than yourself. That is the key for success. When you program your mind to do this or renew your mind to think good about others you will develop a habit of living in good and healthy thoughts about others. By doing this you will follow the biblical principles which talks about holiness

Eph 4:31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.
Eph 4:32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you.
Eph 5:1 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.
Eph 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

Hatred and anger doesn't do any good for you. You might be thinking bad about others but in the real you are poisoning your own life. This bitterness and anger in real is ruining your own life. It leads to depression and sickness, but you can come out of it by renewing your mind and programming it to think good about others.

2. Depression comes without any special reason also:

Luke 12:25-27, "And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? "If you then are not able to do the least, why are you anxious for the rest? "Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

There are times you will not find any particular reason for depression. It happened with me many times in the past. Several years back I remember suddenly I would feel upset and depressed. Then I used to get in argument with my sister or brother and I didn't know why it was happening. One day I really thought about it. When I wasn't feeling good I asked a question to myself, "Why am I upset?" To my surprise I figured out I didn't know why I was upset. Then I thought it's too silly that I don't know why I was upset and there was no reason behind it to be depressed. That day I prayed and decided I don't want to dwell in this upset state. I don't want to fight with others without any reasons. It did change my situation. Every time when I used to get upset I would ask the same question to myself, why am I upset. If there was any reason behind it I tried to correct it and if there was none I just praised God and I used to tell myself God is so good and He has done so many great things and there is no reason to stay upset. I programmed my mind to defeat depression and renewed my mind to stay happy and it did work. There are times when your emotion takes hold of you and it makes you to stay depressed. Satan does it in a very clever way. He would put some negative thoughts in your mind about others, even your family members and if you dwell in those thoughts eventually those negative thoughts will succeed and you will start to believe the lies of satan instead of the goodness of Jesus. That's what breaks the families apart and brings discord between husband and wife.

As you renew your mind and program it according to the word of God you can stay happy. When you are upset look to Jesus and count your blessings and you will have reasons to thank God and to stay happy.

3. Bad experience brings depression:

Phil 4:6 -7, Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

When things go bad or when bad things happen in life it also brings depression and anxiety. I remember going through a bad financial crisis. A few years back we had just enough money to buy things and pay our bills except the gas bill. We had a choice either to pay gas bill which was a huge amount during winter months or to pay for internet connection. Ministry depended on internet connection. Finally we decided to neglect the gas bill to save internet connection and the ministry. Then as gas bills piled up the gas cut notices started coming. It was a bad experience. Every morning I would think, "Today somebody might come and cut our gas." This thought became a tormenting thought. Every morning I would stay scared but every evening I would thank Jesus and pray saying, thank you Lord Jesus you have given us grace to live one more day in a warm and cozy home. I am sure many of you never thought about it or never prayed the way I prayed. How many times the blessings we receive we take it for granted and never think about it or consider it as a great blessing.

Couple of months had passed by and nobody came to cut our gas and then one day I heard the TV news which said, our state has a law that they can't cut the gas during winter months from November to April. I felt very relaxed and knew that nobody would be coming. Then the next year came and the same torment started as we started receiving those gas cut notices. I was kind of relaxed a little bit that year. But one day they came and cut the gas. Wow! Was it a bad experience? Yes certainly! When you are in a bad mess always two kinds of thoughts come. One would be negative thought of fear, uncertainty and the other one is hope for best and positive thoughts. It is really a time of real test and you have the choice to choose one of them. If you go by the negative side it would drain your faith and will bring you to the place of despair and deep depression. If you go by the positive side and believe that Jesus can rescue you from your troubles it would ease your fear and trouble. As they cut the gas I sat there for a few minutes kind of numb not knowing if it was real since we never went through such experience before. Then I tried to push aside the negative thoughts about fear of freezing and dying in winter instead I said in my heart, "Jesus is going to pull us out of this mess and He will come up with some solution." It did help and it did not allow me to get into depression. If you think about God's goodness and the great things He had done in your life in the past you could really beat depression and fear.

As day progressed and evening came our house became colder and colder. We needed immediately $900 to restore our gas connection. My brother called one of his friends and he said he can give only $500. Then my brother called another friend and he said, come next day and I can give you a check of $1000. It was a very relaxing thought and I really praised Jesus with tears in my eyes for helping us. We thought within two-three days our problem would be over and our gas connection would be restored. Well it took three long weeks to restore it. It wasn't a good experience. Our home became very cold. We wore two-three sweaters on top of it winter jacket and were still shivering. In the nights we wore winter jacket and went to bed and it was not a pleasant experience either. We had a fire place but it did a little to keep us warm. I felt light headaches whole time till the entire problem was over. Finally the problem ended and winter months went well though we had no money to pay for the gas bills again. So on the month of May they came again and cut the gas for the second time. We didn't bother much this time since summer was approaching. We didn't try to borrow more money to restore the connection for the next four months. Well this second experience wasn't that hard but it was not very pleasant either. I am so glad that Jesus rescued us from all and we never saw another gas cut again.

Poverty is not a blessing and if you never had gone through it you can never understand the depth of it and you can never understand the pain of those who are going through it. When I was in India whenever beggar came to my door I threw 50 paisa (equivalent to 50 cent) and I was very proud of myself thinking I have done a great charity work. But when we went through this bad experience then only I could know that 50 paisa/cents doesn't help anybody but it's kind of mocking a poor. Poverty doesn't come from God as many preach but it comes from the devil. When bad things happen to you don't jump up at once and say, "All is over". These kinds of thoughts are themselves most damaging that could lead you to destruction. I learned this from my own experience that when bad things happen the first thing I do is to calm myself down and try to understand what had happened and then I talk to myself saying, "This is not the end of the world. As long as Jesus is on the throne our help will always come. Jesus is so good He will make some way out for us to come out of it." Every single time this thought helped me to boost my faith and helped me to not to tire me down in the midst of trials and tribulations. Every single time Jesus did come for us to deliver us from the situations we were in. Trusting on Jesus helped my family and me and I am sure it will help you out too.

If you love Jesus, problems won't drown you but Jesus will come up with some solution or other for you. Jesus is so good. He never failed us and He will never fail those who love Him. God says in, Isaiah 43:2, "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you." What a great God we have. If you love Jesus He will never allow you to drown or fall.

You can beat any depression by trusting in Jesus. If you are depressed today don't dwell in it with tears and hopelessness but look to Jesus and He will make a way out for you. He always made a way for us and He will do the same. You can live joyfully in the midst of your trials and problems. We saw many storms in our spiritual journey but none of them drowned us. None of them could ruin us. As long as Jesus is by your side you will be victorious in your journey. Somebody said, Jesus never promised smooth sailing but He did promise safe landing. If you trust Jesus He will help you to get to heaven safely.

Isaiah 41:10, "Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.'

May Jesus help you to find peace in the midst of depression.
