When Jesus was about to be born many different things had happened. God spoke to Mary and Joseph separately and individually what would be ahead for them.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins." So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us." Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS."

And now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him." When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. So they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet: 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, Are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.'" Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also." When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.

Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him." When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called My Son."

Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.

God miraculously saved His son from death and destruction by giving specific instructions to different people. Even today God wants to lead and guide us in every step of our lives. If we just give our lives to Him, He is ready to bless our lives and protect us from all evil.

Word of God - A Powerhouse

By Sheela Isaac

Mark chapter 4 talks about the parable of a seed sower. When the sower sows the seed it falls on different types of ground. Seed represents "word of God" and different grounds represent "different people". So when a seed sower sows the seed some falls on the wayside and birds come and eat it and so it could not grow. Jesus was saying in this parable that when the seed was sown suddenly Satan comes and takes it away and it doesn't bear fruit. The second type is that of seeds falling on stony ground and because of the lack of soil depth though it sprouts easily, when sun comes out it burns and withers away. The same thing happens with some people. When they listen to the word of God they accept it with great joy but when persecution and problems come they stumble and it doesn't bring any fruit. The third type is that some seeds fall among thorns and the thorns chock them so that they could not grow and bring any fruit. These third kind of people are those who listen to the word of God but the worries of this world, love of money and the things of this world doesn't allow the word of God to root and bring forth fruit. The forth type is of seeds that fall on good ground which brings forth thirty, sixty and hundred fold produce. The Lord says that these are the people who listen to the word of God and yield good fruits in their lives.

The Lord wants that we become good fertile ground which yields good fruits for the Lord. Colossians 3:16, "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom,.." When we allow the word of God to dwell in us richly then we turns into a good and fertile land which yields good fruits for the Lord.

1. Word of God (Bible) helps us to get rid of sin and not to commit sin. King David says in Psalms 119:11, "Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You!"

2. Word of God shows us the right path. David says in Psalms 119:105 "Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path." Word of God helps us to walk in the right path and to find the right way in which God wants us to walk and to lead a holy life.

3. Jesus Himself is the "Word" and when we repent from our sin and invite Jesus into our heart we become that good and fertile land and we can lead a fruitful life.

Let's see how we can allow the word of God to dwell richly in our heart.

1. Reading the word of God:
We need to read the word of God on a daily basis or we need to read regularly. It is not like we read the word today and then we forget to read for next two-three days and then read again.

2. Systematic reading:
We need to read the word in a systematic manner. If you read a chapter from Mathew today then read a chapter from psalms next day then read a chapter from mark then from some other book and after seven eight days later you will forget from where you were reading or what did you read and you will get so confused that you would not feel like reading the word again. That's why we need a systematic reading or we need to read chapter wise. For that we need to start reading from chapter one and then we have to read it in continuation and need to read daily. Pslams 1:2 says, "But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night."

Many think that they can find quick answers from the word of God. They don't read the word daily but when they need to know what God had to say they would try to open the Bible and try to find what God has in store for them but it doesn't work. I remember a joke. A person wanted to know what God had to say or what God wanted to tell him. So he closes his eyes and says a line of prayer, "God please talk to me through your word." Then he keeping his eyes closed opens a portion from the Bible keeps his finger on some verse to see what God has revealed for him. Then he reads that verse and the verse says, "Judas committed suicide." He thinks oh! no! this is not a good verse so it can't be the suitable verse for me. Then he repeats the same process closing his eyes and this time he stumbles on the verse which says, "you also do the same." He says again, "no it is not for me." Then he prays, "God please speak to me through your word." Then he tries the third time repeating the same process. This time he finds the verse which says, "Whatever you want to do, do it quickly." Many times we also do the same thing don't we? When we want quick answers we try to look in the word of God and the rest of the time we neglect the word and don't read the word.

3. We need to meditate on the word of God:
When we read a portion or a paragraph we need to meditate upon those verses. We need to look at what God had to say through that particular portion or what message God wants to convey to us. In the Bible we find a list of the things which says, what God likes and what not, which things are sin and which not. So when we read the word for example when we read "telling lies" is sin. We need to look into our lives to see whether we have such a habit. We need to check our own life in the light of the word to see how many times we speak lies. When we find that these kinds of things are present in our life we need to repent before Jesus and we need to ask for deliverance from such habits. So every time when we read the word of God we need to check our life and we need to correct our lives according to the word of God. In the same way we find, 'not to criticize or backbite, not to take bribe, not to steal etc.' The whole lot of lists of do's and don'ts are there in the Bible. So we need to check our lives every time we read the word and we need to correct our lives and we need to get rid of sin and sinful desires.

Many times we read the word of God and we pray too but nothing happens and we don't see any change in our life, the reason is that what we read we try to fit it on others. We try to see that the words we read about fits well on which family member or what verses fit well on husband or wife. When we read the word with that attitude it doesn't edify us and that's why we don't receive any benefit from it. Instead we need to read the word and meditate in the way that edifies our own life and which could bring a change in our own life and we can receive holiness through the word.

4. Word of God gives us victory over Satan or over our own problems:
We can get rid of our problems our troubles and our sicknesses through the word of God. If we read Mathew chapter 4 it says, Jesus was fasting for forty days and after this Jesus was hungry. Then Satan comes and says to Jesus, "If you are son of God tell these stones to become bread." We read that Jesus gave defeat to Satan by the word of God. He said, "it is written, it is written." So in the same way we can also defeat Satan by the word of God (Bible).

Few years back I remember that the TV news said, "this year would be the worst year of flu season." They said that a new strain is coming and the regular vaccines probably would not work. So when I heard I was worried about it thinking, "We don't have medical insurance so if we get sick and if we need to go to hospital we might get a huge medical bill." When I thought about it I was worried but I had heard previously that word of God does wonders and whenever people applied Psalm 91 in their lives they received miracles. So I found the verse from the Bible which says, Psalm 91:10, "No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;" I started saying this verse night and day and started claiming the verse for my family and for me. I claimed this promise everyday and said, Lord your word says, "you will deliver us from any plague so please protect us from flu." Whenever I found people around me were coughing and had cold I again claimed the same verse. When I heard people known to me got very sick because of flu and is admitted in the hospital for a week or more I again claimed the same promise. The wonderful thing is, that year none of us caught flu. Even we didn't have the ordinary cold and cough. Yes the word of God has such an awesome power that we can escape many problems by just claiming the word.

I was listening to the messages of Br. PG Vargis a few days back. I heard his story which was quite amazing. One day he was visiting his mom and she said, "Do you have diabetes?" He said, "No." She said, "Your symptoms look like that you have diabetes." He thought, "let me have a medical checkup to figure out if I have diabetes." Then he visited the doctor's hospital and found out that he really had diabetes. He came back and started quoting healing scriptures and started claiming the promises given in the Bible. We can find many promises of healing in the Bible. The Bible says, "We are healed by the stripes of Jesus." The Bible says, "the God of Bible is a healing God." So he started speaking those verses and started claiming those verses for his healing. He commanded diabetes to leave his body in Jesus name too. He did that the whole day then next day he went for another checkup. Then he found out that he still had diabetes. Then he returned home and repeated the same process whole day. Went next day for checkup and found out he still had diabetes. He said to the nurse, "I will come back again next day for checkup." She said, "you don't need to come everyday for checkup." He said, "I will come for checkup everyday till I am healed." Then he went for checkup forth day and then fifth day. When he went on fifth day the nurse checked and said, "you don't have any diabetes." He beat the diabetes in just 5 days with the word of God. At that time he was 50 or 60 years old and now he is more than 70 years old and he said, "he never saw diabetes again". How powerful the word of God is. We can beat our problems, sicknesses and bad situations by the word of God (Bible).
