Oil of Gladness! Last week we saw how Oil of Gladness, the precious Holy Spirit takes away our sorrows, pain and heartbreaks and replaces them instead with gladness. If we once again read Isaiah 61:3 we can understand that this oil of gladness is being given to those who mourn. (Isaiah 61:3), "To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified."

When would a person mourn? Is it not when his/her heart is completely broken down or when death had occurred in the family or of a friend? A person will mourn when he/she looses the most valued possession in his/her life whether it is the death of a family member, whether it is of a close friend or the loss of their entire possession/finances. Death and loss are terribly painful. Nobody can fill that gap and nobody can give any compensation for that loss.

Prophet Jeremiah says in Jeremiah 8:22, "Is there no balm in Gilead, Is there no physician there? Why then is there no recovery For the health of the daughter of my people?"

Why those calamities came upon them? If we read further, we can understand that sin was the reason and there was such pain and chaos that they were in constant pain.

In Lamentations 1:1-6 we read the same thing, "How lonely sits the city that was full of people! How like a widow is she, Who was great among the nations! The princess among the provinces Has become a slave! She weeps bitterly in the night, Her tears are on her cheeks; Among all her lovers She has none to comfort her. All her friends have dealt treacherously with her; They have become her enemies. Judah has gone into captivity, Under affliction and hard servitude; She dwells among the nations, She finds no rest; All her persecutors overtake her in dire straits. The roads to Zion mourn Because no one comes to the set feasts. All her gates are desolate; Her priests sigh, Her virgins are afflicted, And she is in bitterness. Her adversaries have become the master, Her enemies prosper; For the LORD has afflicted her Because of the multitude of her transgressions. Her children have gone into captivity before the enemy. And from the daughter of Zion All her splendor has departed. Her princes have become like deer That find no pasture, That flee without strength Before the pursuer."

But there is a flip side! If we repent from our sins and turn to God, He is ready to heal our sins, hurts and pains and is ready to remove mourning from our lives by giving the Oil of Gladness so that we could have everlasting joy.

We read in Psa 45:7-8, "You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions. All Your garments are scented with myrrh and aloes and cassia, Out of the ivory palaces, by which they have made You glad."

My friend, are you in tears today? Are you weeping today and have no rest in your soul? Come to Jesus, He is ready to wipe away all your tears and is ready to fill you with unending joy. Just come to Him and submit yourself at His feet.

Great prophets of the Bible, Samuel - part 2

By Sheela Isaac

1. Faithfulness toward God
2. Holy and clean life
3. Direct contact with God
4. Accurate prophecies of Samuel
5. Samuel was in constant touch with God
6. Miracles happened in his time
7. He was a praying prophet
8. Samuel was obedient to God

So far we have seen why Samuel is considered as a great prophet. He was very faithful towards God. He lived a very clean and holy life. He had direct contact with God. He conversed with God as a friend speaks to another friend. He received accurate prophecies that came to pass and he knew what he had to do. He knew the work that God had given to him to do. He revealed the heart of God to the people of Israel. He gave the same message what God had to say in the various situations. That's what made him a great prophet.

5. Samuel was in constant touch with God:
Samuel was in constant touch with God. You know that presidents, kings, prime ministers and those who have lots of money will have personal secretaries. When you call them they will not answer the phone directly but the secretary would be attending to your call. They will listen to what message you have for their boss and then the secretary would pass on your message and then they will bring the reply for you. Samuel acted as a personal secretary of God. He heard from God and brought His messages and solutions to the public at times. Can you imagine and visualize regarding the office of a prophet, how big that position is? Samuel was not an ordinary secretary of some human being but was a secretary of God the creator Himself. What a privileged position he had who talked with God, who was always in contact with God.

The Bible says that he was instrumental in the changing of kings of that land. He knew whom to be appointed as king. First he appointed Saul and when Saul didn't walk according to God's will God's order came to Samuel to find another king. When King Saul disobeyed God, Samuel conveyed God's message to Saul:

1 Sam 15:22-23, "Then Samuel said: "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. "For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you from being king."

Then God's word came to Samuel to get another king. He was not a mere prophet but he was a kingmaker. Prophetic ministry is not an ordinary ministry but it's of a very high position. Samuel made himself worthy for this high position because of his faithfulness and holiness.

1 Sam 16:1, "Now the LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons."

You know the story how he went and how he selected the new king. This is a very fascinating story. Samuel went to Bethlehem and invited Jessie and his sons for this occasion. It looks that Samuel knew that one of the sons of Jessie is destined to become king but he had no idea which son?

1 Sam 16:3, "Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you."

When we read the story the task looks pretty easy but in real it is not. If you don't know how to hear God you can't know what to do and whom to select. Jessie had eight sons and a huge responsibility was on Samuel's shoulders to find out the right person who would indeed be God's choice too. There are possibilities that you could hear devil's voice, or you could hear your own gut feeling or you could hear God's voice. Hearing and making sure that you have really heard from God is not that easy. Here we find that Samuel could accurately hear from God. It tells us how close he was to God. Bible says that Jessie brought his first son Eliab and introduced him to Samuel. Samuel saw him to be so good that he thought, "who else could be this smart for this position?" But God said to him, "I have refused him". Then the second third and all walked before him and God did not choose any of them.

1 Sam 16:6-7, "So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, "Surely the Lord's anointed is before Him." But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

1 Sam 16:10 Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, "The LORD has not chosen these."

Then Samuel asks, "Are all young men here?"
1 Sam 16:11 And Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all the young men here?" Then he said, "There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep." And Samuel said to Jesse, "Send and bring him. For we will not sit down till he comes here."

Jessie says, "No, one more son is there". See that the father did not consider him to be fit to become king. That's why Jessie never invited David in this feast. This son whom his own father rejected as 'useless', God selected him. Today you might look useless to your community and for your country but if God had chosen you He is going to fulfill all the things He had promised to you. Man's thinking about you doesn't matter but what God thinks about you is precious. If God had called you for the ministry march forward no matter what and one day God will prove you as a useful vessel for His kingdom.

When Samuel insisted, Jessie brought his rejected and ignored son in and Samuel heard from God and anointed him as the future king of Israel.
1 Sam 16:12-13, "So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the LORD said, "Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!" Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward.

Samuel was a great prophet who was so close to God. He was an ordinary person like you and me but he made himself close to God because of his conduct and holiness. You can also become close to God by your faithfulness toward Him and by a CLEAN and HOLY walk with God. You can too become a great prophet of God.

Standing in the Gap - Fasting prayer on 8th Dec.. 2015

As the Bible says in Ezekiel 22:30 "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it." And also the Bible says in Numbers 16:48, "And he (Aaron) stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped." We have fasting prayer every second Tuesday of each month. Our next fasting prayer meeting will be conducted on 16th Nov. 2015
