By Sherly Isaac

Bible tells us about the God who really cares for us. I remember that when I was studying in higher secondary. Math had always been the toughest subject for me. No matter how hard I studied; I had very little success in this subject. When I was appearing for my high school exams and on the day I wrote my math paper, I felt that I was not going to get pass marks. I came home and I was so distressed that I wept and wept. I don't know when I fell asleep but when I woke up, the first thing I noticed was the scripture verse in the scripture calendar that was hanging on the wall of my room. The verses were from Prov 3:5-6, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths."

I felt as if God was speaking directly to me through these verses. A great peace filled my soul. After that, every time when I tried to think about my math paper, I had no worries but instead I felt great peace in my heart. At that time I could not understand that God had answered my prayers and that was the reason why great peace came in my heart. And when the results came, I passed my exam with flying colors. I was completely amazed when I looked at my math score; it was beyond my imagination that I scored very high marks. I realized that it was nothing else but the supernatural intervention of God.

Later on while reading my Bible I could understand about that great peace that I experienced. Yes, my friend, no matter what your circumstances, no matter what you are going through, no matter how grave the situation may look like, great peace is available for you if you look to Jesus, if you ask Him to fill you with His great peace, He will gladly do it. Your circumstances cannot over power you nor could it uproot you, nor could it shake you. Because He holds His children in His mighty hands that nobody could touch you.

At times how much we worry, how much we weep in bitterness thinking what would happen if such and such thing would take place... but the Bible tells us to give our worries to Him and He will take care of us and He will keep us in perfect peace.

When Jesus was crucified and was buried all His disciples were completely shaken. They were terrified and their hearts were broken. But Jesus stood in their midst and said, "Peace be with you". When His disciples saw Him they were glad. They were rejoicing, their tears turned into tears of joy. Their hearts were filled with great peace. The same thing Jesus wants to do for us today.

Today you may be broken in spirit, having no peace in your life, and you may be weeping bitterly having been laden with untold worries. But my friend, come to Jesus, He is ready to bless you and give you peace that this world cannot give. He can forgive and forget all your sins and will give you a new life. More than that, He is ready to give you eternal life, the life that will never fade again. Just come to Him, repent from your sins and accept Him as your Lord and Savior. He has already paid the price for our salvation on the cruel cross. He shed His precious blood on the cross in order to get pardon for our sins. He had already taken our sicknesses, poverty and problem on the cross and because of that we need not to suffer. He died on behalf of us. Today, you can get this deliverance through Jesus Christ who is ready to transform your entire life.

John MacArthur writes in his book titled, "Hard to Believe: The High Cost and Infinite Value of Following Jesus" (Chapter 5, page 87, Title "Highway to Heaven" under subtitle, "Standing At the Crossroads", that "Once you have come in the wide gate, the whole gang's there and life is easy: no rules, no rigid morality, and plenty of tolerance and diversity just as long as you say you love Jesus. All the desires of the fallen heart are fed on that road. There's no need for humility, or to study the Word of God. It takes absolutely no effort; as with a dead fish floating downstream, the current does it all. It's what Ephesians 2:2 describes as "the course of this world." It's the broad road where, "the way of the ungodly shall perish" (PS.1:6).

John MacArthus is completely mistaken regarding 'The Broad Way' and 'The Narrow Way' as spoken by Jesus. We do not need to enter into the broad way as every person (not yet saved) is already in the broad way. Unless we repent from our sins, turn to Jesus and our sins are forgiven we cannot be within the Narrow Way... Whether you confess yourself a Christian or not, if your sins are not forgiven, you cannot go to heaven. That's why Jesus again and again said and even urged people to repent from their sins. But to my surprise, John MacArthur has completely denied the key point of Jesus' ministry which calls every person to repent.

Further John MacArthur writes, "Contrast this with the narrow way. The best translation of the text in Matthew 7:13-14 would be a "constricted" way. It literally means to press together or be confined, as in a narrow place on a precipice. That's why Paul said in Ephesians that we must walk circumspectly, with our eyes open, and not wander around. It's a very restricted way, hemmed in on both sides by the chastening hand of God. You step off this side and--whack--you get your spiritual knuckles hit! same on the other side. The requirements are firm, strict, refined, and clear-cut, and there's no room for any deviation or departure from them. It must be the desire of our hearts to fulfill them, knowing full well that when we fail, God will chasten, and then God will wonderfully and lovingly forgive and set us on our feet again to pursue His will."

Paul addresses the disciples who were already in the narrow way, who had already known Jesus, whose sins were forgiven. Peter reminds us in 1Peter 4:3, "For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles--when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries."

And the same Peter stood among people and called them to repent from their sins on the day of Pentecost. As we read in Act 2:38, "Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

Then again Peter said in Act 3:19, "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,"

So you can see that not only the Old Testament prophets but Jesus and His disciples also gave much emphasis on repentance and in turning from our sins. Because there is no other way through which we can be saved. Unless we repent and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we cannot receive forgiveness of our sins. No matter how hard we try, no matter what type of self denial we do, nothing is going to work except the blood of Jesus that washes us from all our sins.

Further John MacArthur says in page 86, "There's nothing wrong with raising our hands or saying a little prayer, but those things do not bring true salvation apart from authentic faith in Christ. Jesus called for a narrow, difficult, radical, dramatic admission of sinfulness, an acknowledgment that we are nothing and have nothing with which to commend ourselves to God. Faith begins when we throw ourselves on His mercy for forgiveness."

Once Jesus told the parable of the prodigal son in which He told how the prodigal son decided to go back and repent from his sins as we read in Luke 15:18-24, "'I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.' And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' And they began to be merry."

You can see a clear picture that the prodigal son just did not sneak inside the house through the back door. But he repented; he confessed his mistakes and turned from his wicked ways. So to find favor with God and to receive forgiveness of our sins, the first step is to realize that we are sinners. The second thing is to come to the Father. Third thing is to repent of our sins. Fourth thing is to turn around from our wicked ways.

Unless we repent from our sins God will not forgive. No matter how broken your heart is, no matter how you feel guilty of your sins. Judas felt sick of his act, he was so filled with guilt that he committed suicide and lost his soul. So feeling guilty is not useful unless you come to Jesus and repent of your sins. That's the main point where John MacArthur differs from the Bible.

Standing in the Gap - Fasting prayer on 8th Dec.. 2015

As the Bible says in Ezekiel 22:30 "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it." And also the Bible says in Numbers 16:48, "And he (Aaron) stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped." We have fasting prayer every second Tuesday of each month. Our next fasting prayer meeting will be conducted on 16th Nov. 2015
