By Sherly Isaac

Very often we go through great and so many storms in our lives that at times we feel so hopeless and helpless that we conclude that everything is over for us. In the Old Testament we come across Hagar who also thought in the same way. She was kicked out of her home and in one day, she lost her home, her husband and her livelihood. She did not know where to go, where to turn? Her future was bleak. Then there was the greatest tragedy lurking in shadows before her that she could lose her only son also.

Have you ever reached to such a state in your life? Probably many of us never had been in this situation or in some of the problems similar to what she was facing. But here is the fate of a lady, who lived like master in the house, who shared every good things in Abraham's house, who in just one day became homeless, who in one day turned to be nothing and driven on the streets. Not only on the streets but in the midst of a wilderness where there was no water left to drink. And when she saw her son dying because of lack of water, she could not bear the pain anymore and she lifted her voice and wept bitterly.

Oh, this is such a beautiful story of a helpless and hopeless woman who had lost everything in her life and yet God never left her nor forsake her. She reached down to her lowest point in her life and thought that everything was over for her. But God heard her cry from heaven and answered her prayers.

Bible says in Gen 21:16-19, "Then she went and sat down across from him at a distance of about a bowshot; for she said to herself, "Let me not see the death of the boy." So she sat opposite him, and lifted her voice and wept. And God heard the voice of the lad. Then the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, "What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. Arise, lift up the lad and hold him with your hand, for I will make him a great nation." Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink."

My friend, you may be going through such conditions where you might have thought that everything is over for you. I remember when on 3rd Oct. 2005 when we went to the hospital where my dad was admitted, four doctors told us that everything was over and said, "Even if we put your dad in ventilator still there is no chance of his recovery". We could have easily thought in the same way as the doctors and nurses thought that everything was over, but we put our trust in God who promised that dad will recover. And the same God who answered Hagar from heaven answered us and did mighty miracle in our lives by resorting dad's life.

This God is still alive and He is ready to answer you from heaven. No matter what you are going through, no matter what you are facing today but if you call upon Him, He will answer you from heaven. Probably you have faced foreclosure or bankruptcy. Probably like Hagar, you are thinking where we will go and where we will live? Let me tell you one thing that the same God who made a way for Hagar is ready to make a way for you. In the midst of the desert where there was no water, if He can show water to her, He can also show you a way. He is ready to show you His plans and His purpose, just call upon His name. And He will come rushing to you to wipe away your tears, to bless you.

Great prophets of the Bible, Samuel - part 3

By Sheela Isaac

So far we saw great godly qualities in Samuel that made him a great prophet. Here are those points.

1. Faithfulness towards God
2. Holy and clean life
3. Direct contact with God
4. Accurate prophecies of Samuel
5. Samuel was in constant touch with God
6. Miracles happened in his time
7. He was a praying prophet
8. Samuel was obedient to God:

6. Miracles happened in his time
Bible says, God of the Bible is a miracle working God. If you have problem with miracles you are not reading the same Bible. If you have problem with miracles you are not following the same Jesus because throughout the Bible in the Old Testament as well as in the New Testament, we see miracles. God did miracles in the past, He did miracles during the time of Jesus, He did miracles at the time of His disciples and He is doing miracles in our times too. So the message of the Bible is the same and it doesn't change any time.

Bible says that Samuel had called for rain to prove his point and rain did come.
1 Sam 12:17-18, "Is today not the wheat harvest? I will call to the LORD, and He will send thunder and rain, that you may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking a king for yourselves." So Samuel called to the LORD, and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day; and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.

Another prophet Elijha also prayed when there was drought and rain came.

7. Samuel was a praying prophet:
Samuel was a praying prophet. He prayed for the people for which God had made him responsible. He was a praying leader. Prayer is an integral part of ministry. If you can't pray for the people you are not fit for the ministry.

(a). Samuel prayed for the safety of the people:
Bible says that he prayed for the people whom he was leading for their protection. He prayed for their well being. He prayed for their safety. He gave his life for the service of the people.

1 Sam 7:8 So the children of Israel said to Samuel, "Do not cease to cry out to the LORD our God for us, that He may save us from the hand of the Philistines."

(b). Samuel prayed for the SINS of the people:
If God calls you as a spiritual leader over the people it's your responsibility to pray for their salvation. If a spiritual leader could not bring about a solution for their sins, he is not fit for that job. Samuel prayed for their sins so that they can turn from their evil ways. Samuel says in 1Samuel 12:23 that if I don't pray for the people it would be sin against God.

1 Sam 12:23 "Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you; but I will teach you the good and the right way.

(c). Samuel prayed for Saul:
The Bible says, God had rejected Saul but still Samuel prayed for him in his life time. When the Lord had told Samuel that He had rejected Saul, Samuel cried out all night.

1 Sam 15:11 "I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has turned back from following Me, and has not performed My commandments." And it grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the LORD all night.

(d). Samuel mourned for Saul:
1 Sam 15:35 And Samuel went no more to see Saul until the day of his death. Nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul, and the LORD regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.
1 Sam 16:1 Now the LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel?

Samuel was a great prophet and leader over his people because he was a praying prophet. He had a genuine burden for his people.

8. Samuel was obedient to God:
(a). He was willing to risk his position:
Samuel did what God wanted him to do no matter what. He obeyed God in everything. He did everything that God wanted him to do. When the Israelites asked for a king it displeased Samuel. Samuel knew that the Israelites wanted to replace him and wanted to bring a king in his place. Samuel knew that if he brought a king he and his sons will lose their positions to judge Israel. But Samuel was willing to know and act on what God wanted to tell him in this matter. When he inquired from God, God said to listen to the people and to give them a king.

1 Sam 8:6, "But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." So Samuel prayed to the LORD. And the LORD said to Samuel, "Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them."

Samuel listened to God at the expense of his position. He was obedient in that adverse situation too. He wanted to obey God no matter what.

(b). He was willing to risk his life:
When God asked him to anoint a new king instead of king Saul it wasn't an easy job for him. He knew that he would be killed if he did what God wanted him to do but he still decided to go with God.

1 Sam 16:2 And Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me." And the LORD said, "Take a heifer with you, and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.'

All these qualities made Samuel a great Prophet. Are you a great preacher, pastor, leader, prophet? We can learn a lot from the life of Samuel. His life was a great example for us. We can become closer to God by following these examples.

May the Lord help you to have a close walk with God.

Standing in the Gap - Fasting prayer on 8th Dec.. 2015

As the Bible says in Ezekiel 22:30 "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it." And also the Bible says in Numbers 16:48, "And he (Aaron) stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped." We have fasting prayer every second Tuesday of each month. Our next fasting prayer meeting will be conducted on 16th Nov. 2015
