"Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask counsel of the LORD. So Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them to let them live; and the rulers of the congregation swore to them. And it happened at the end of three days, after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors who dwelt near them"( Josh 9:14-16).

After the death of Moses, Joshua led the Israelites to the Promised Land. Joshua was successful in defeating the Canaanites and in taking their land. When the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, they worked craftily, and went and pretended to be ambassadors of a far off land. They took old sacks on their donkeys, old wineskins torn and mended, and patched sandals on their feet, and old garments on themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry and moldy. And they went to Joshua, to the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, "We have come from a far country; now therefore, make a covenant with us." And Joshua did the biggest mistake he did in not asking God whether these people were speaking the truth or not and whether he can make a covenant with them. They pretended as if they were coming from a far away land but it wasn't so. They were successful in fooling Joshua because he did not ask God what to do in that situation.

One wrong decision put Joshua and all the Israelites in trouble. In our lives too we make so many decisions. If we fail to get counsel of God we could be deceived, cheated and even it could cost our everything. Just one wrong move can cost you everything. When God spoke to Abraham and said that He will make him great and that his descendents will be like the stars and as the sand which is on the seashore, he made the wrong decision to take Hagar as his wife. And Ishmael was born. But later on when Isaac was born, Sarah did not like the presence of Hagar and Ishmael in her house. She insisted on Abraham to send them away. You can see that the fight which started among Hagar/Ishmael and Sara/Isaac is still continuing between the descendents of Ishmael and the descendents of Isaac. One wrong move of Abraham created all these chaos which is still visible in our times.

That is the reason why we need to get counsel from God for every move of our lives. God gives us guidance through different means. He speaks through His Word - the Bible. When you read the Bible some verse will strike you, comfort you, fill you with His peace and hope or would be an instruction what to do in that situation. God speaks through His Spirit - the Holy Spirit as we read in John 16:13 "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come." Holy Spirit is the most precious thing anybody could ever receive in his/her life. If you are saved, you can receive the Holy Spirit. Bible tells us in the book of Acts that those who believed in the word of God received the Holy Spirit as we read in Acts 8:14-17, "Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit."

Yes, when Holy Spirit comes and lives with us, He gives us the right Counsel and leads us in the right direction. How wonderful it is to have the divine counselor with us who directs us in every step. You can have this wonderful experience by accepting Jesus in your life and receiving Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit is none other than the Spirit of God.

Pope Now and Then

By Sherly Isaac

We all know that Pope John Paul II who was the highest authority of Catholic Church passed away last week. In the news I heard it again and again that the 1st Pope was saint Peter mentioned in the Bible. I do not know much about Pope John Paul II but Let us look in the Bible and see who the first Pope was and what type of ministry he did.

Jesus spoke about Peter in Mat 16:18-19, "And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

When Jesus said that He will build His Church on that rock and that the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it, He declared to build a glorious Church that would not be intimidated by the world, flesh, devil and evilness of this world, a Church without wrinkle, without spot but holy and without blemish. A victorious Church against whom death and hell will not prevail. Jesus envisioned His bride the Church as a glorious, victorious and blessed one.

Repentance:
Peter was one of the disciples of Jesus whom He chose to be a shepherd in the church. After the resurrection of Jesus, He met Peter and told him in John 21:17, ..."Feed My sheep." God appointed Peter to be a shepherd who could feed His sheep and take care of His sheep. If we read in the Book of Acts we read that Peter was faithful in his calling. He preached the message which he saw Jesus preaching very often. The message of repentance. Acts 2:38 says, Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." And in Acts 2:40-41 says, "And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation." Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them." Three thousand people were added in the church that single day and everyday more people were added as they got saved.

Again Peter preached and this time five thousand people were got saved as we read in Acts 4:4, "However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand."

The very distinct qualities we see in Peter is that he exactly preached what Jesus preached. He exactly did what Jesus wanted to make a glorious and victorious church. Peter preached the message of Repentance so that people could get salvation of Jesus Christ and be saved from the perverse generation.

Holy Spirit:
Not only that but Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit. Bible says that when Jesus left this world, Holy Spirit gave commandment to Apostles as we read in Acts 1:2, "until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen." And when the day of Pentecost came Holy Spirit came upon them and filled them as we read in Acts 2:4, "And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."

Holy Spirit gave them boldness to preach the Gospel as we read in Acts 4:31, "And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness." The same Peter who denied Jesus three times was now preaching the Gospel with boldness because he received power from heaven through Holy Spirit.

Signs, wonders and healing:
Once Peter and John were going inside the temple. There was a lame man from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms from those who entered the temple. When he saw that Peter and John were about to go into the temple, he asked for alms. Bible tells us in Acts 3:4-10, "And fixing his eyes on him, with John, Peter said, "Look at us." So he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. Then Peter said, "Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk." And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them; walking, leaping, and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God. Then they knew that it was he who sat begging alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him."

Many mighty wonders and signs were done through the apostles and they shook the whole nation and surrounding nations through their preaching.

Bible tells us that people got healing even if Peter's shadow fell on the sick as we read in Acts 5:15-16, "so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them. Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed."

God wants that His body should get all the blessings which He stored up for them so that His bride could stand before Him completely holy and blameless. He wants a glorious, victorious, healthy church. Let us pray that God may choose a man according to His own heart for the position of the new Pope who may walk in the foot steps of Jesus and do exactly according to the will of Jesus.

Standing in the Gap - Fasting prayer on 8th Dec.. 2015

As the Bible says in Ezekiel 22:30 "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it." And also the Bible says in Numbers 16:48, "And he (Aaron) stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped." We have fasting prayer every second Tuesday of each month. Our next fasting prayer meeting will be conducted on 16th Nov. 2015
