Now we have a new Pope in the Catholic Church. There were fierce debates going on, on the subject whether this new Pope will allow the Catholic priests to marry or not. Not only the Catholic Church but some other denominations also followed the same tradition but I have no idea from where this tradition came or how it started.

Peter had family:
Bible tells us that Peter whom the Catholic Church considers as the first Pope was married. Once Jesus went to Peter's house and saw that his mother in law was sick of a fever as we read in Matthew 8:14-15, "And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. So He touched her hand, and the fever left her. And she arose and served them."

Bible also tells us that Peter's wife went with him in all his missionary journeys. We read in 1 Cor 9:5, "Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas?" Catholic Encyclopedia gives few more details about the life of Peter. Clement of Alexandria wrote about Peter that he was married and had children. Further he writes that Peter's wife suffered martyrdom, in other words she was persecuted and was killed as Peter and other Christians were.

Peter was an Apostle:
We read in Mat 10:1, "And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease." And in the 2nd verse we read the names of the twelve apostles.

What are the qualities of an apostle? An apostle is a person whom God gives the power to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead and cast out demons. When Jesus sent the twelve Apostles in the field, he gave them power. Bible tells us in Mat 10:7-8, "And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give."

So the main task of the apostles was to make the people aware of the kingdom of heaven and to make them prepared to enter into the kingdom of heaven. Not only that, He gave them power to deliver the people from oppression of devil, sicknesses, mental, emotional and physical torture and to relieve those who are in the bondage of devil etc. Jesus gave them power from above to do all these things. When Jesus was leaving this world, He was aware of the fact that His disciples would be all alone and they needed power to do His will. That is the reason why He promised to send Holy Spirit in this world who will be always with those who will believe in His name. Jesus said to His disciples in Acts 1:5, "for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." And in the 2nd chapter of the Book of Acts we read that the mighty and precious Holy Spirit descended on about hundred and twenty people who were praying in the upper room. And mighty things were performed through their lives.

Even today, God wants us to have this wonderful and mighty power from above to shake the nations. If you are called for ministry, don't ever go in the field without this power or resource. Wait until you receive the power from above. God will equip you before He sends you in the field just as He equipped His disciples before sending them in the field.

God is looking for yielding vessels who can receive His power and take His Gospel to the ends of the earth. Are you one of them?

Women's Role in the Church

By Sherly Isaac

There are many opinions about women being in the ministry. Most of the mainline Churches believe that women should not preach the Gospel. Let us look from the Bible what the Bible says. We read in Eph 4:11-13, "And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ."

Jesus Himself appointed five types of ministries (apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers) in the Church and we do not find in the scriptures as if women cannot do that.

Prophetess:
Even in the Old Testament there were Prophetess and women Judges whom God used for His glory. In the New Testament we read about Anna the Prophetess who served God and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption as we read in Luke 2:36-38 Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem."

Women Evangelists:
Let me bring your attention towards two women who evangelized the world around them. In the 4th chapter of John we read about a Samaritan woman who came to draw water from the well. Jesus spoke to her and at the end she was convinced that Jesus was the promised Messiahs about whom God prophesied in the scriptures and who was about to come. She did not stop there but she left her water pot there and returned to her own people, in her village and proclaimed the Good News that she found Christ the Messiah. Bible tells us that Many Samaritans believed in Jesus because of the word of that woman who proclaimed the Good News in her village as we read in John 4:39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me all that I ever did." And in John 4:42, "Then they said to the woman, "Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world."

Jesus could see a potential evangelist in that woman. The Samaritan woman evangelized many and turned them to Christ by her testimony which no one other could do in her village. When she met Christ, her heart bubbled with joy and she could not contain that joy to herself. She spread it. That's what happens when a person knows Jesus Christ personally. Whether you are a man or woman you cannot contain that unspeakable joy to yourself but you will proclaim it to others if you do really know Him personally.

Another woman evangelist about whom we read in Mark 16:9-10, "Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept."

The Good News about Jesus' resurrection was first spoken by a woman named Mary Magdalene and few other women who were with her.

Woman Ministers:
Paul writes in Rom 16:1-2, "I commend to you Phoebe our sister, who is a servant of the church in Cenchrea, that you may receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and assist her in whatever business she has need of you; for indeed she has been a helper of many and of myself also."

Paul used the word diakonon which basically means "minister" or "spiritual servant". Paul used the same term for himself in Col. 1:25 (diakonos). We read in Col 1:25-26, "of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God, the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints." Phoebe was not the only one in the ministry with Paul but there were many women who served Christ in the Church.

Further we read in the same 16th chapter of Romans a list of men and women who served with Paul in the vineyard of Jesus Christ.

All these things tell us that women have always played a major role in the Church and of course God is still interested in women preachers, evangelists, prophetess, apostles and ministers. God can use you mightily for His glory if you give your life in the mighty hands of Jesus. You may be thinking that as a weaker vessel you cannot be used in the ministry of God but if you place your life in the mighty hands of Jesus, He will use you as He used other women in the Bible.
