My sister always has problem finding direction in a new place. Once mom and I went with her for shopping. After shopping she took the car from parking lot and asked us where we have to go now. Before we could say anything she took off in the street. I said, "now you have to turn right." That place was kind of a five or six corner. She turned right but not along the right road. "Oh, no, you took off on wrong road", I said. I continued, "OK, now take a right turn and then again take another right turn so that we could come back to the same road. But in the next street, she took again a wrong turn. When she realized that she was not in the right road, she started panicking. After going further a few more yards, we had no idea where we were headed. My mom and I were almost screaming that either follow the directions or just park the car at road side. But she was so frightened that her mind stopped working. She was not even hearing what we were saying.

Fear! That's what fear does to us. Fear takes away our ability to think. At times fear takes over our lives and makes us to take wrong steps.

Once my sister had to go to some place which was near to my college where I was studying. So I said, you can come with me and I will show you how to get there. So she came with me and I told her how to return taking the local bus by herself. While I was returning in the afternoon, I reached to a stop where I had to change bus by going across the street. When I came to that spot I realized my mistake that I did not tell her that she should exchange bus after crossing the road. My heart froze thinking whether she could really reach home or not? Great fear gripped my soul. When I reached home, the first thing I did was after opening the gate, I stooped down and looked inside of the opened door whether she had come back home safely or not. Thank God that she returned home safely.

There are many who take wrong steps because of fear and destroy their lives. It is true that sometimes various problems of our lives overwhelm us and fill our hearts with great fear. In those moments of fear put your trust in the Lord God Almighty who keeps those in perfect peace who put their trust in Him. Bible tells us in Isaiah 26:3, "You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You."

Are you afraid of situations through which you are going? Give your worries and fears in the mighty hands of Jesus. He will take care of you. Do not allow that fear to rule in your lives and kill you. The greatest fear of humankind is death. Jesus said in John 6:58 "This is the bread which came down from heaven; not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever." And also in the book of John 11:25 we read, Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live."

Jesus came in this world and gave His precious life for us so that we could come out of death and the fear of death and live forever. If you have not yet eaten from the heavenly bread, your future is in dark. Eternal death awaits you. But you can get rid of death and the fear of death by inviting Jesus into your life. He will give you life - the life eternal.

We wish every father, a very happy and blessed father's day.

Father’s Day

By Sheela Isaac

Eph 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 "Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with promise: 3 "that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth."

Last month we celebrated Mother’s day. Now we are going to celebrate Father’s day. This is the day when people give gifts to their father and prepare best food. Bible says, “honor your father and mother.” It is a command from God not for one day during the whole year but for every three hundred and sixty five days of the year. Now a days, parents are the most neglected persons in this world. In India specially in Northern parts of India people believe that girl is some one else’s treasure (paraya dhan). So one day girl is going to get married and will go away to some other house but the boy is the permanent treasure of the house. The parents live in this hope (all the years) expecting that one day in their old age the boy is going to take care of them and he is going to provide for them. But today the conditions have changed. Boys who are supposed to take care of old parents and provide for them, when they get married, they leave their parent’s house and go away to their new home, though they might be living in the same town. Or in other case scenario it become so routine to put the parents in old age home/nursing home and get rid of them. You can imagine how the parent’s heart might break. The parents struggle hard to raise their children thinking all along that they are living for their children. But one day the same kids flew away like a bird to their new nest and the poor parents who worked hard to build a big and spacious house for their kids are left alone. Don’t you see that it has became a terrible problem in our society?

The question is, why it happens? The simple solution is that if you love God, you will definitely love your parents and would have concern for them. The Bible says, “Obey your parents for it is right and honor your father and mother that it may be well with you and you may live long in this earth.” God has commanded it and it is an obligation for every person to look after their parents and take care of them. They may not need your money but they need your full love. Money can buy for them cloth or medicine but not emotional support and love. Money can buy the world but not the love they are looking for. A couple of months back I heard the news about a person who had some medical monitoring device through which he used to monitor his old age mother who was in nursing home in some other city. The news said, “he is so concerned about his mother that every hour he monitors her condition.” I am really surprised thinking what kind of concern you have when you cannot keep her with you in your house.

Look at the life of Isaac. He loved God and he was obedient to his parents. He was so submissive to his parents that he was ready to die on mount moriah. Gen 22:9-10, “Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.” The Bible says that even he married the girl his father Abraham chose. Gen 24: 2 & 4 So Abraham said to the oldest servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had,....” 4 "but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac." You might say it was old time but now we are living in a very advanced era. That is true but God’s rules have not changed nor the commandments of God. God has not given His word for some particular generation but it was given for all time.

Look at the life of Joseph. He was a God fearing man. The Bible says that he loved God and walked in His ways. He had a fear of God in his heart and that was why he lived a clean life. If you have respect for God, you would respect His word and respect your parents. The Bible says that the brothers of Joseph hated him and wanted to kill him first but later they sold him to Midianites. Gen 37:28, “Then Midianite traders passed by; so the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt.” Joseph’s life became miserable because of his brothers and he had to live as slave. But God whom he trusted never left him. The Bible says that God pulled him out from the dungeon and raised him to the second highest position in Egypt. Gen 42:6, “Now Joseph was governor over the land; and it was he who sold to all the people of the land.” When Joseph became a great man he did not use his power to take vengeance against his brothers. Instead he provided food for them. Joseph feared God and that was why he did not destroy them. Not only that but he called his father from far away land to live with him. He cared and provided for his old father. Gen 45:9-11 "Hurry and go up to my father, and say to him, 'Thus says your son Joseph: "God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not tarry. 10 "You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near to me,.... 11 "There I will provide for you, lest you and your household, and all that you have, come to poverty; for there are still five years of famine."'

Look at the greatness of Joseph. He was not ashamed of his father or brothers. He knew very well that the Egyptians did not like shepherds but he was not worried about it. He never forgot his roots. He never forgot who he was. Whether you reach the highest position in your life, still never forget your roots. Never forget who you are and who your parents are. Never reject them because God hates it. God says, “take care of your parents so that it may be well with you.” It is hard to believe how in the world somebody could discard their parents or put them in old age home. I heard the true story of a person. One day he said to his mother that he is taking her to doctor. He left her in a old age home and said, “I would return within ten minutes.” Then he left her and went away never to return. The ten minutes turned to an hour then days and months and the son never returned. She never knew that her son abandoned her forever and left her. What a tragic story it is. How can you leave your parents who raised you and provided for you all through your life in such a situation? Please never forget that God hates it. As a son and daughter it is your obligation to provide for your old parents and take care of them. It is your sole obligation to give them love and respect and to obey them. If you are not doing it then something is wrong with you. If you say that you love God then you must love and respect your parents too. Otherwise the first statement is incorrect. Eph 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 "Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with promise: 3 "that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth."

May God bless you and make you a loving son/daughter in this father’s day.

Christ is the Surety of the Better Covenant

By Sherly Isaac

Gen 44:32-34, "For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, 'If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father forever.' Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the lad as a slave to my lord, and let the lad go up with his brothers. For how shall I go up to my father if the lad is not with me, lest perhaps I see the evil that would come upon my father?"

This is from one of the most moving stories of the Bible. It is the story of Joseph whom God raised from dungeon to palace. From slave to be ruler of Egypt. Jacob had twelve sons. Joseph was the eleventh son. One day he went to give food for his brothers who were shepherding their father's sheep. But he was sold to the Ishmaelites by his own brothers. He was taken to Egypt and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there, (Gen 39:1). Because God was with Joseph, he prospered and became a successful man even in his slavery. But soon he was put in prison because of false charges. Then one day the chief baker and the chief butler who were with Joseph in prison saw dreams. Joseph told the interpretations of their dreams by the help of God and it happened exactly as Joseph interpreted. The butler's post was restored to him by Pharaoh and the baker was executed by pharaoh. Joseph might have waited and waited for the butler to recommend him and take him out of prison. But it did not happen until the end of two years.

At the end of two years Pharaoh saw a dream and he was troubled in his heart. So he called all his magicians and wise men but no one could interpret his dream. Finally the butler told Pharaoh about the young man named Joseph who interpreted his dreams. Joseph was brought in on the command of Pharaoh. He told the interpretation of the dream and Pharaoh made him ruler of Egypt. Years later his brothers came to purchase food as there was great famine in all the land. Joseph saw them and recognized them but acted as a stranger. He spoke to them roughly and told them that they were spies. He also said to them that, if they did not bring his youngest brother Benjamin they cannot see his face next time. When Jacob heard all these things he was bereaved. He said to them, "You have bereaved me: Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take Benjamin. All these things are against me." He was heartbroken and his sorrow was great. Finally Judah told him in Gen 43:9, "I myself will be surety for him (Benjamin); from my hand you shall require him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever."

Cutting the long story short, Benjamin, the youngest brother of Joseph was accused of the guilt of stealing Joseph's silver cup. Now when Judah saw that Benjamin will become a slave of Joseph, he interceded for him standing between Joseph and Benjamin. On the one side there was Benjamin standing guilty and on the other side Joseph the judge whose decision will change the life of Benjamin forever. Judah stood between them as a mediator and pleaded and pleaded with Joseph for the life of Benjamin.

His moving intercession is found in Gen 44:18-34, "Then Judah came near to him and said: "O my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord's hearing, and do not let your anger burn against your servant; for you are even like Pharaoh. My lord asked his servants, saying, 'Have you a father or a brother?' And we said to my lord, 'We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, who is young; his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother's children, and his father loves him.' Then you said to your servants, 'Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.' And we said to my lord, 'The lad cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, his father would die.' But you said to your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall see my face no more.' So it was, when we went up to your servant my father, that we told him the words of my lord. And our father said, 'Go back and buy us a little food.' But we said, 'We cannot go down; if our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down; for we may not see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.' Then your servant my father said to us, 'You know that my wife bore me two sons; 'and the one went out from me, and I said, "Surely he is torn to pieces"; and I have not seen him since. 'But if you take this one also from me, and calamity befalls him, you shall bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave.' Now therefore, when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us, since his life is bound up in the lad's life, it will happen, when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die. So your servants will bring down the gray hair of your servant our father with sorrow to the grave. For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, 'If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father forever.' Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the lad as a slave to my lord, and let the lad go up with his brothers. For how shall I go up to my father if the lad is not with me, lest perhaps I see the evil that would come upon my father?"

Judah was ready to take the blame on himself and was ready to serve as a slave in the place of Benjamin.

Jesus did the same thing on the cruel cross for each and everyone of us. He became our surety so that He could bring us back to Father. We read in Heb 7:22, "by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant." We all are found guilty and we deserve to get punishment. But Jesus took all our punishment and guilt upon Himself and died on behalf of us so that we could be free from slavery, bondage and sin. He is ready to pull us out of our bondages. Just come to Him and give your life to Him. He will make you a free person. Jesus promised in John 8:36 "Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed."

You could be a slave to sin today but Jesus can make you free. Please pray this prayer with me, Lord Jesus, you became my surety so that you could make me free and deliver me from the hands of enemy. Please forgive and forget all my sins and give me your grace to live a life of freedom. Today, I accept you as my Lord and Savior. Come into my life and be my Lord and Savior. Thank you for giving me this new life of freedom. I give you all glory and praise. I pray this prayer in Jesus name, amen.
