By Sherly Isaac

There was a prophet named Elijah in Israel when Ahab was king. Elijah had unique ministry. He condemned the sins of Ahab, the king of Israel, often brought fire from heaven, was fed by ravens, did unusual miracles which we do not see in the ministries of other prophets. Bible does not talk about his parents or his background. The very first time we read about him is in the book of 1 kings, 17th chapter.

The first verse in 1 Ki 17:1 says, 'And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word."' Then God told him to get away from that place and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan" (1 Ki 17:3). When Elijah was hiding there, God Himself provided for him everyday. The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook" (1 Ki 17:6).

But a time came when the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. What Elijah would do now? Did God forget his needs? Of course not! God's word came to him saying, "Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you" (1 Ki 17:9). So Elijah went to Zarephath and found the widow as God told him. God miraculously provided not only for him but for the widow of Zarephath, her son and her household. Bible says in 1 Ki 17:15-16, "So she went away and did according to the word of Elijah; and she and he and her household ate for many days. The bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry, according to the word of the LORD which He spoke by Elijah." When the widow's son died, Elijah cried out to God as we see in 1 Ki 17:20, "Then he cried out to the LORD and said, "O LORD my God, have You also brought tragedy on the widow with whom I lodge, by killing her son?"

Elijah was already going through problems. If we count his days of trouble, it was for three and a half years. Because the land had no rain from three and a half years, Ahab was searching for him to kill him. In 1 Ki 18:10 Obadiah said, ..."there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to hunt for you; and when they said, 'He is not here,' he took an oath from the kingdom or nation that they could not find you." So Elijah was already in trouble and now the widow's son was dead. But Elijah wrestled in prayer and God revived the boy. We see yet another miracle when he finally appeared before Ahab.

After that we see that Elijah stood before Ahab and challenged the prophets of Ball. He brought fire from heaven by his prayer, to show that there is a living God and to show that Jehovah alone is God. At the end the false prophets were put to death. Then the next thing which happened was the heavy outpouring in that dried land. 1 Ki 18:41, "Then Elijah said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain."

Every time when Elijah went through trouble, God always came for his rescue and he saw mighty miracles through the hand of Almighty God. But all these years of trouble made him completely worn down. When Queen Jezebel heard about all these things which Elijah did and how he executed the prophets of Ball, she got very upset. Then she sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time. And when he received that message, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there"(1 Ki 19:2 ).

Elijah the mighty man of God gave up his fight and ran for his life. All these years of hardship took a great emotional toil on him and finally emotion took over his life. He stood in that position when all his faith was drained up and he ran for his life. My friend, are you in the same situation today? Have you faithfully served the Lord but the problems of your life have broken you completely? Had your emotions over taken your life? Look to God, instead of bowing down before your emotions. Think about the great and mighty works of the Lord which He did in your life. The same God who delivered you in the past will deliver you. Just like He did for Elijah. God told him "Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria"(1 Ki 19:15). He returned and we do not see any indication of Jezebel ever harming him. The same God is able to deliver you from your enemies.

Where is the LORD God of Elijah?

By Sherly Isaac

2 Ki 2:11-14, 'Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven and Elisha saw it, and he cried out, "My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!" So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces. He also took up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan. Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, "Where is the LORD God of Elijah?" And when he had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha crossed over.'

Elisha was a young man who followed Elijah in his foot steps. God sent Elijah to anoint Elisha to be the prophet of Israel in his place. Now time came for Elijah to depart and go. Not only Elisha but the student prophets were also aware that God was about to take Elijah away from this world. Elisha followed him till the last moment when they were separated. Obviously it was painful for Elisha that his mentor, his master and a person like his father was departing from him. When it happened, he cried out, "My father, my father...". Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the water with it and said, "Where is the LORD God of Elijah?" The water from Jordan river divided in two and he could cross over it. In desperation he cried out, "Where is the LORD God of Elijah?" When he said that, he literally meant, "where is the Almighty God who did mighty and awesome miracles through Elijah?" God answered his cry by dividing the Jordan river and proving to him that God of Elijah was with him.

At times we find ourselves in the same situation of desperation as of Elisha. We cry out, "Where is the LORD God of Elijah? Or where is God who did mighty miracles in the lives of Bible prophets?" Psalmist says in Psa 34:15, "The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their cry."

When Jesus was on the cruel cross, He cried out, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? (Mark 15:34)" He was desperate and in great agony. My friend, when we cry out to God in our desperation and in our agony, He understands what we are going through and He comes for our rescue. He remembers the pain and agony He went through and He hastens to deliver us.

If you are going through desperate situations, Jesus can help. With Psalmist I can say, God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble"( Psa 46:1 ). Yes, He is ready to hear our cry and He is ready to help us. Be of good cheer and trust in Him.

Standing in the Gap - Fasting prayer on 8th Dec.. 2015

As the Bible says in Ezekiel 22:30 "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it." And also the Bible says in Numbers 16:48, "And he (Aaron) stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped." We have fasting prayer every second Tuesday of each month. Our next fasting prayer meeting will be conducted on 16th Nov. 2015
