Yesterday in Manhattan, NY there was a steam pipe explosion. Steam as a cloud rose more than seventy floors up and according to eyewitnesses the whole ground as well as the windows of the buildings were shaking. It created too much of panic and chaos in downtown. It seemed as if the terrorists have hit New York once again. I saw on TV that people even left their shoes and ran for their lives. This is the chaotic world we live in. We do not know when and where, what would happen.

Just yesterday there was an airplane crashed and none survived. Just few days back there was an earthquake in Japan. Not only this but conflicts, violence and bloodshed are in various places. Take the different parts of the world and you will find chaos almost everywhere. People are dying everywhere and hurting in masses. Fear is all over the place. But God promised to keep His children in great and perfect peace as we read in Isa 26:3, “You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.”

Just today morning I was reading 2 Kings 18th chapter that describes how Hezekiah had great peace in the midst of chaos and hardships. He became king at the time when Assyrian king was powerful over his kingdom. His father Ahaz paid tributes to the king of Assyria because Syria and Israel threatened his kingdom as we read in 2 Ki 16:7 So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria, saying, "I am your servant and your son. Come up and save me from the hand of the king of Syria and from the hand of the king of Israel, who rise up against me." When Hezekiah came to power, according to the rule, he must have to pay tribute to the Assyrian king yet he ceased paying tribute to Assyria as we read in 2 Ki 18:7, “The LORD was with him; he prospered wherever he went. And he rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him.”

More than that we read in 2 Ki 18:8, “He subdued the Philistines, as far as Gaza and its territory, from watchtower to fortified city.”

How it happened? The reason is very simple Hezekiah walked in the ways of God and completely trusted in Him as we read in 2 Ki 18:5-6, “He trusted in the LORD God of Israel, so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor who were before him. For he held fast to the LORD; he did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments, which the LORD had commanded Moses.”

After David many kings reigned in Israel and in Judah but the Bible says that most of them did evil in the sight of God and they did not walk in the ways of God as David was. But Hezekiah was opposite of them and he could see the blessings of God. We read in 2 Ki 18:3, “And he did what was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father David had done.”

In the same chapter we read that the Assyrian king made the Israelites captive because they did not listen to God. 2 Ki 18:11-12 Then the king of Assyria carried Israel away captive to Assyria, and put them in Halah and by the Habor, the River of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes, because they did not obey the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed His covenant and all that Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded; and they would neither hear nor do them.”

Can you see that Hezekiah the king of Judah was constantly surrounded by enemies even his neighboring powerful country Israel was went in captivity of Assyria and yet he was fearless and peaceful because God was with him. Not only that, God protected his kingdom from his enemies and made him prosperous above all. If we walk in the ways of God and obey Him, He will protect, prosper and bless our lives. He will fill us with His divine peace that world cannot give. Will you make Him your God and try to obey Him in everything? If yes, blessings and prosperity would follow you all the days of your life.

Finger Pointers

By Sheela Isaac

Psa 141:5, "Let the righteous strike me; It shall be a kindness. And let him rebuke me; It shall be as excellent oil; Let my head not refuse it. For still my prayer is against the deeds of the wicked."

When somebody points out something in our lives how much we are annoyed, upset, and angry. And in response we feel enmity against them, we yell, shout at them and even reject their suggestion. Have you ever thought that it could be God who brings such finger pointers and criticisers in our life? Have you ever thought how God keeps such people around us to transform our lives and purify us?

If we look into the lives of the people of the Bible we see that the same pattern follows throughout. Look at the life of David. He committed a grievous sin. First he committed adultery with another man's wife and then when he found out that he could not keep it secret he killed the man to cover up his sin. But it looks that after committing these grievous sins he failed to recognize his fault. He was not looking remorseful or shocked. When he failed to realize his sin God sends His prophet Nathan. It looks quite interesting that Nathan tries to expose the intensity of his fault in the form of a story. Here is the story:

2 Sam 12:1 -7, "Then the LORD sent Nathan to David. And he came to him, and said to him: "There were two men in one city, one rich and the other poor. "The rich man had exceedingly many flocks and herds. "But the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb which he had bought and nourished; and it grew up together with him and with his children. It ate of his own food and drank from his own cup and lay in his bosom; and it was like a daughter to him. "And a traveler came to the rich man, who refused to take from his own flock and from his own herd to prepare one for the wayfaring man who had come to him; but he took the poor man's lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him." So David's anger was greatly aroused against the man, and he said to Nathan, "As the LORD lives, the man who has done this shall surely die! "And he shall restore fourfold for the lamb, because he did this thing and because he had no pity." Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! …."

Thus Nathan pointed his bony fingers toward David and said, you are the man, you are the one who did it. Please remember that David was his king and he had authority to do anything. David had two choices in front of him. 1. Yell, shout, reject it, get upset and put Nathan in jail or to kill him. 2. Repent and turn around. I am so glad that David chose the right thing. Instead of making big fuss out of it he humbled himself and accepted his fault. Not only did he accept, but repented with his whole heart and turned around. Read Psalms 51 where you will find the prayer of repentance of David. You will find how he cried out before God and asked for His mercy. That is what every person on this planet needs. If you want to go to heaven you need to cry out as David did. You need to really repent for your small as well as great sins and turn around. David did not just pray but he really turned around. That is why throughout the Bible we never again see similar incidence in David's life. He never ever committed such horrible sin in his life again. That is called repentance not only feeling sorry for the past sins but totally turning around and never willing to go in it again is called true repentance. When this true repentance happens it makes you a 'born again' (john 3:3 & 7) believer. If you do not know Jesus as your personal savior till today, you need this kind of repentance. If you are a believer in Christ you too need this kind of repentance whenever you slip and fall back in sin.

David could not recognize his sin until Nathan pointed it out. How many times in our lives we fail to recognize our sins and keep committing the same sin over and over again. Thank God for the finger pointers whom God keeps in our life to point out our sin and to show the right path. I still remember when I was a baby Christian and did not know much about God's word, God put such finger pointers in my life. It not only corrected my life but it transformed my life. I am ever thankful to such people. It was around 1987 when my cousin Suganthi came to live with us. She stayed in our home for around two years. She is a good believer. When she was in our home I saw her spending hours together in prayer and Bible reading. She not only brought me to salvation, but also taught me how to hear God's voice and how to prepare messages. I was just a new believer in Christ and she used to point out mistakes in my life. Well, though she is a good friend of mine and I loved her dearly but I did not like her criticism. I already wrote that when you hear criticism about you, you will do either of the two things. 1. Get angry or 2. Realize your mistake and repent. I did both. I used to fight with her and used to argue with her to justify my point but later on during the quiet time of prayer I confessed my sins to Jesus and asked for forgiveness. I said to Jesus, 'she is correct and I am willing to change.' It did change me. The second person who did great job in my life was my own brother. Whenever my brother pointed out something, again I did not like it. The first thought which came in my mind was, "I am a big sister how come a person younger than me should correct me or show my faults." How many times it happens when prestige and ego would not allow us to humble ourselves. I did many failed arguments and created false defense for myself just to look good and to show how good I am. But every time I failed miserably. My brother would just say a line, 'what you are talking is wrong because Bible says the opposite of it." I am glad that I repented every time at the feet of Jesus and corrected myself. I dealt with those sins one at a time and asked for help from Jesus. Those prayers of repentance did change my life. Many months and years later the arguments between us became lesser and lesser because all those sins and mistakes faded away and disappeared from my life. The Bible says in Proverb 28:13, "He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy." Thank God He keeps Finger pointers and spiritual people around us to transform our lives. We all learn from each others during our spiritual journey and correct our lives in the light of the Bible.

Bible gives us hundreds of such examples. Look at the life of Saul and David. God raised David as finger pointer for Saul. But Saul did not learn from it. He chose to reject what David had to say and it cost him his life and eternity. Once David a shepherd boy and an ordinary employee in king's palace spared king Saul's life and when it happened Saul made a phony confession. 1 Sam 24:9 -10, "And David said to Saul: "Why do you listen to the words of men who say, 'Indeed David seeks your harm'? "Look, this day your eyes have seen that the LORD delivered you today into my hand in the cave, and someone urged me to kill you. But my eye spared you, and I said, 'I will not stretch out my hand against my lord, for he is the Lord's anointed.' Here is Saul's fake confession and deceitful blessings to David. 1 Sam 24:16-17 & 19, "So it was, when David had finished speaking these words to Saul, that Saul said, "Is this your voice, my son David?" And Saul lifted up his voice and wept. Then he said to David: "You are more righteous than I; for you have rewarded me with good, whereas I have rewarded you with evil. "For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him get away safely? Therefore may the LORD reward you with good for what you have done to me this day." What a great deception on Saul's side. He says to David, ' may the LORD reward you with good for what you have done to me this day.' Saul's fake repentance did not change him and he did not repent from his evil ways but after a few days he again went in search of David to kill him. Fake and phony repentance does not change anybody but true repentance brings Salvation.

Look at the life of Eli the priest of God. Eli’s sons who were priests did not walk in God's ways. God raised Samuel a young boy of 7 or 8 to point fingers at him (1 Samuel chapter 3). God does not care whether you are small or great God can raise anybody as finger pointers in your life. Balaam was not listening to God and so God had even to raise a donkey to speak to him Num 22:28 , "then the LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, "What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?" (Numbers 22:22-40). In the New Testament God raised Paul as a finger pointer for Peter. Peter could have thought, “I am the senior guy here. I was with Jesus and am I not better experienced than Paul, am I not a chosen disciple of Jesus but how come Paul the junior one is pointing finger to correct me. Paul looked at Peter and said, 'hey senior guy your life has double standards. You behave one way with the gentiles and the other way with them in the presence of the Jews. You need correction. Gal 2:11 -14, "Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all, "If you, being a Jew, live in the manner of Gentiles and not as the Jews, why do you compel Gentiles to live as Jews?"

God is not a respector of persons. God does not care who you are or what you are. God does not care whether you have high position in society or whether you are well educated in society or whether you are very wealthy in society. God only cares for your soul. He is interested in your soul but not in your worldly position. He has interest to save you from hell fire and for that He would raise anybody as finger pointer to correct you. It could be a person subordinate to you, it could be a seven or eight year old child, it could be a very insignificant person in your eyes or He could even raise a donkey to show you the right way.

The question is that when God's correction comes in our lives how do we yield to it. If we react wisely like David and Peter we could find change in our lives but if we react foolishly as Saul, Balam or Eli did, it could turn out to be a disaster. Throughout in the Bible, those who rejected God's voice and His good advise have wrecked their lives. But those who obeyed God and corrected their lives and lived a holy life, could save their soul for eternity. Let us also say with the psalmist today, "Let the righteous strike me; It shall be a kindness. And let him rebuke me; It shall be as excellent oil; Let my head not refuse it. For still my prayer is against the deeds of the wicked (Psa 141:5)."

May God help you to make the right choices.

Awesome God – Part 6

By Sherly Isaac

In the past we looked that how mighty and awesome is the God of the Bible. In this issue also we would see the life of Elijah how God worked wonders and miracles through his life.

It awes me that not only did God speak words and it happened exactly but also He gave the power to men to do the same thing.

In 1 Ki 17:1 we read, “And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word." Elijah was a human being just like us yet he could stop rain to fall and when he spoke it rained again. We read in James 5:17-18, “Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.”

Prayers of Elijah were powerful enough to bring the rain or stop the rain. When there was famine God instructed him to go to the brook and hide there. There was water in the brook but there was no food. But miraculously God provided him in that desolate place sending crows with meat and bread. 1 Ki 17:4-6, “And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” So he went and did according to the word of the LORD, for he went and stayed by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.”

My friend, if this awesome God is your God, let me tell you that He will not leave you nor forsake you no matter in what situation you are. No matter how desolate the place may be where you are, where no man has access. No matter how difficult your situation could be, He will come for your rescue. He will not allow you to die in the wilderness. He knows every need of yours and He really cares for you.

Further we read that God’s instruction came again to Elijah when the brook was dried up to get up and go to the widow of Zarephath as we read in 1 Ki 17:8-9, “Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you."

If this awesome God is your God, He will command even ravens to feed you. Look how God second time commanded a widow to feed him. Now everything does not look fabulous in the beginning. When Elijah arrived at the widow of Zarephath he realized that she was at her wits end. There was nothing in her home except a handful of flour and little oil in a jar. She told him that she and her son were about to eat the last meal and were going to die. The desperate woman needed a miracle and her miracle came at the last moment when she thought there was no other way except to embrace death. God sent Elijah at the right time and Elijah lived with the widow of Zarephath until the famine was over. Because in 1 Ki 17:13-14, And Elijah said to her, "Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son. For thus says the LORD God of Israel: 'The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the LORD sends rain on the earth.'"

Are you worried about your life today? My friend, if this awesome God is your God you need not to worry. Almighty God will do worries for you. He can command anybody to feed you. In the times of trouble He will not leave you nor forsake you. He will walk with you and deliver you out of all your troubles. So be of good cheer.
